Cute little tourist spot in Liberal, Kansas. Note my rating is based on viewing the grounds alone as my visit was at sunset on a holiday so things were closed. Didn't go into the areas much and mostly looked from the street but nothing seemed to block me from moving through the gardens. Didn't see a sign about rules and was only able to stay a short time anyway. It was very clean, very cute (playground area and painted signs/characters) and beautiful (Dorothy statue area, garden). Loved the dedications on the bench, the signs, and the "yellow brick road". My family loved "Wizard of Oz" so I thought they'd get a kick out of the photos if we were able to stop here and so glad I was able to get some!
I'd read about this spot online earlier in the trip and knew we were headed through that town on our way home from a funeral. We agreed to make some random detours as lide is too short and there is so much to see. I brought it up to my husband that I'd love to drive by and take some photos if we went through at a reasonable time. He thought that'd be cool! At one point, he spotted a billboard but I missed it and it sounded like a cute, corny tourist travel stop sign. Perfect! However, by the time we switched drivers at the next rest stop, our GPS was showing we'd be in Liberal sometime after 8pm so oh well. Probably wouldn't make it this time. We also needed fuel and diesel was a ridiculouy cheaper in nearby Oklahoma than it was in Kansas but we were getting such relatively bad mpg going back West compared to our initial trip East that we needed to stop sooner.
My husband directed me to a station actually in Liberal where the attached store was already closed but the pumps were open. Surprise, surprise! The station, a Sinclair if I recall correctly, was basically on the same road as Dorothy's! The side street along the fuel station lead right to the buildings, playground, and garden. There was also a cute mailbox at the start of the side street that was oversized and said "Dorothy Gale". He pumped while I went for a short walk. It was a gorgeous night and I wished he wasn't also dealing with work calls so he could have walked over, too, before we had to get back on the road. We are based in Arizona but I'd want to make a trip to go back through and explore this place when it is open. It was just a touching...
Read moreI am a truck driver and I walked the mile from the truck stop to visit this place. I have been a lifelong fan of the Wizard of Oz and the movie also has a special place in my heart because my mother was born the year this movie came out and was named Dorothy after the character in the movie. It was a very emotional day for me as I visited 2 years after my mom passed. To say this place was amazing would be a gross understatement. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. From the live actress dressed as Dorothy to the painstakingly authentic house that they used set photos from the movie to make the rooms look like they did in the movie. I was completely awestruck. The trip through Oz where the actress portrayed scenes from the movie was excellent. At the end of the tour you will see a room full of memorabilia from the movie with some pieces that were actually in the movie. It was a surreal experience and well worth the money paid for the tour. It was the highlight of this old trucker's day to say the least. The gift shop had quite a variety and was reasonably priced. If you are considering visiting, you should. It was well worth the visit and trip down memory lane. A big thank you to the actress who was our tour guide and the young lady who ran the museum....
Read moreWell what can I sayToto? We were in KS lol. Famously known as the Land of Oz🥰. I do recommend you taking time to tour it if you have the time. You don’t have to leave the main road to get to it. I enjoyed browsing the gift shop. The staff were very friendly & helpful. Nice sovereign to choose from. We didn’t tour Dorothy’s house/the museum tour during this visit. We have tour in the past and it’s a very nice tour. We did walk around the grounds and followed the yellow brick roads. I would have liked to seen a better painting on the faces on the Oz characters along the yellow brick road. The face weren’t appealing and did no justice for the actual characters. Especially Judy G who beautifully played Dorothy. Nevertheless this didn’t take away from the fact that I enjoyed my stroll of the museum grounds. There is even a Toto dog park!! A playground for the kids. It also a nice place to eat lunch as the kiddos play. P.S. They didn’t have the size shirt I wanted. The staff did try to find one for me. I am thankful for their effort. Their act of kindness let me know they appreciate their visitors....
