My husband and I own several businesses, including an Airbnb arbitrage business and a shared living space business both in the US and overseas. We often travel to China or Turkey for purchases, but due to time constraints, we decided to shop locally for the last few items needed before our container ships. We had already purchased beds from Bob's and Ashley Furniture and needed mattresses for the nine beds. We prefer shopping in person for mattresses to experience them firsthand.
After receiving a quote from a nearby store, we decided to check out Mattress Plus on 07/30/24 for a potential better deal. However, our experience there was far from satisfactory. Upon entering the store, we noticed the lack of customer service; it was empty, and an older African American gentleman, the sales representative, was sitting at the back. He didn't seem welcoming and appeared to lack knowledge about the products.
We explained that we needed nine mattresses at a reasonable price and asked if they could be shipped to our container in Newark, as the latest we needed them was Monday. The sales agent called someone, claiming it was the "boss," and put the phone on speaker without discussing our needs in detail first. This felt unprofessional, as we were essentially negotiating with the boss directly without proper context.
During the call, the boss mentioned that if we paid with a debit or credit card, an additional $200 per mattress would be added to the original price. This struck us as unusual and possibly illegal. The sales agent's confused expression suggested he found it odd as well. My husband, who had stepped out to get his phone, returned and was equally shocked. We had received a better quote from Mattress Firm across the street, and my husband went to the car to fetch it.
Meanwhile, the boss continued to express concerns, calling our purchase a "red flag" simply because we wanted the items shipped and planned to pay with a card. He insinuated that paying with cash would eliminate this "issue." This was baffling to us, as we had already made it clear that we wanted the best price and had no problem paying in cash if needed. Our company often uses credit cards for organization, especially for overseas purchases, and we're flexible with payment methods for our US properties.
Needless to say, we ended up leaving, and I literally said, "No deal," as we walked out of the business. As I was filming the location with my vlogging camera for personal records and groups, the sales representative came out and threatened to call the police, as if that was supposed to scare anyone. Certainly not us. I am not done yet with this business.
For the record, we plan to report this to the Attorney General's office and share the audio recording with our Airbnb arbitrage group. As someone who often refers clients to businesses for the best deals, this experience will certainly be noted as a warning.
To Mattress Plus at the Little Falls location: please train your sales representatives better. It's unprofessional to have customers negotiating with the boss over the phone without understanding their needs. Many businesses struggle with competition from online retailers, where customers don't face such experiences. Take the time to understand your customers, their stories, and provide them with respectful and informed service.
As consumers, we know our rights and refuse to spend our hard-earned money at a place where we are treated poorly. Next time, we'll stick to trusted options like Amazon, even if it means sacrificing the in-person experience....
Read moreI had been wanting a new mattress for quite a while but we all know what a hassle it can be with so many choices out there but I decided to give it another shot a few weeks ago. I had already been at 4 other mattress stores that morning but decided to go to one more, Mattress Plus in Little Falls where I met Fred who was extremely helpful with his past experience, his knowledge of the products and his overall sales practices. After looking around I had a couple of items picked but still needed to make a final decision which I told Fred I would be back next week after I made that decision (I’m sure he’s heard that a few times). Anyhow, I made that decision and went back to Mattress Plus the following week where Fred introduced me to Mubashar. After speaking with both gentlemen we came up with a great deal and I couldn’t be more happier with my purchase. Shipping was right on time with the scheduled date/time. They had my new mattress/base set up and removed my old mattress/box spring within 15-20 minutes and were very respectful and professional while doing so. Like I said, we all know that buying a new mattress can be some what overwhelming but these two gentlemen, Fred and Mubashar were very helpful, very professional which made my purchasing experience that much easier. If your looking for a new mattress, base or anything associated with bedding go and see these two gentlemen at Mattress Plus in Little Falls and they will take care of you. Thanks guys it’s...
Read moreI’m usually not one to give negative feedback but I was just absolutely taken back by the interaction we had yesterday. We walked in knowing what type of mattress we were looking for and likely would have ordered to be delivered at a later date.
The salesman we were talking to sat down with us and gave a price (the deal was putting in the adjustable attachment for free, even though we were NOT AT ALL interested in purchasing that and voiced that multiple times) he then said that he would price guarantee/match this for a set number of days. I reiterated the question because I was unsure of what he meant whether he meant before or after we purchase, and he practically laughed at me.
They then brought us to less expensive mattresses saying that they were more comparable to the ones that we would get if we shopped at different stores.
After seeing that I was visibly annoyed another salesman came over and brought us back over the the original mattress that we were interested in, and then tried to offer us half of the price the first salesman offered for only the mattress without the adjustable attachment (which is ONLY what we had intended the purchase!)
They lost the most simple sale they could have made because they tried to “blindly” rope us into more than what we wanted.
AND there was a dead bug on the mattress they tried to show us. Better off buying a mattress on Amazon...
