I took a leather lounge chair to Ackerman’s on 7-31-24 to have a new seat cushion made, in addition to a couple of other small repairs. The chair was going out of state to a family member on a long planned two day drive to coordinate delivery. I was clear with Zak, who took the order, that the chair needed to be ready by a specific date (Sept. 25th), and he verbally told me that the work would be completed in time.
I didn’t receive any updates for over 7 weeks, so I called a few days before my planned departure to check on the chair. I was told it wouldn’t be ready for another two weeks. I was so disappointed and angry that no one had called to tell me there would be delays so I could’ve had time to adjust my plans. I received a call from an Ackerman’s manager (I don’t remember his name), and, while he was very nice and apologetic, he confirmed that the chair wouldn’t be ready due to waiting on a leather hide delivery for the new seat cushion.
After returning home last week, an Ackerman’s employee contacted me to say the chair was ready. I told the caller the back story on the delivery date problems and said that when I came in to pick up the chair, Ackerman’s should be prepared to discuss a substantial discount with me, as getting the chair out of state will now involve buying a one way plane ticket for the family member taking the chair, a car rental to drive the chair out of state, and a two day drive involving an overnight stay in a hotel, meals, and gas. He passed on my comments and asked if I wanted to have someone call me back, and I said yes. A day and half later, Zak returned my call, said he had discussed my situation with the owner, and no discount would be offered. After a somewhat heated phone discussion, Zak then stated that despite his verbal confirmation of the delivery date, there was no paper trail for me to prove the delivery date.
This is a crap way to do business, not to have the integrity to take responsibility for a verbal commitment to a customer, whether or not there’s a paper trail, especially when they knew there was a date deadline and didn’t call to notify me that things were running behind. Zak’s attitude was that it didn’t matter what he told me when I placed the order, if I didn’t have a paper trail, then Ackerman's was off the hook since I couldn’t prove anything. He said they’re a small business and can’t discount jobs. Despite being somewhat higher on prices, I’ve had several pieces worked on by Ackerman’s over the years, and I have no issues with the quality of their work. They did a great job on the seat cushion and the other repairs to the chair, and they did nice work on other pieces of furniture in the past. I wasn’t requesting a discount based on their work, but on their failure to have the chair ready by the required date without any notification of delays.
I told Zak that Ackerman’s has lost me as a continued customer. I would think that, as a small business, word of mouth is very important to them, and I’ll be warning people about using their services without making sure that every possible detail is documented in writing, no matter what is verbally confirmed to them, so that Ackerman’s has to honor the agreement, or make financial restitution. I feel a discount was warranted and should’ve been offered to me. Color me very disappointed with...
Read moreWe were surprised to find that Ackerman & Sons didn't have a solid 5 Star rating overall. We were new to using this business for our reupholster needs. The quality of the craftsmanship is by far superior. Beautiful workmanship. We felt their pricing was extremely fair for the work and detail that needed to be completed. We loved how they came to our home and quoted everything and left us with the labor pricing and how much fabric each piece needed. No sales pressure and they addressed all of our questions so we could make a sound decision on how we wanted to proceed. Everyone we interacted with at Ackerman's was very professional and knowledgeable. Excellent customer service. They even assisted us with selecting quality fabrics for 3 of our items. At a super price. And they special ordered the upholstery tacks/nails we selected. They were extremely patient while we were reviewing and selecting both fabric and tacks/nails as they had a large selection. We plan to use them for all our future reupholster needs as a result of our positive experience. This is a very professional and honest small business with true craftspeople and excellent customer service. We are very grateful...
Read moreAckerman & Sons used to be the best in the business. I have used them on three occasions and have been thrilled with the work they did. So when I needed furniture repair on two antique pieces I inherited from my recently deceased Mom I called them. One piece, a small antique secretary, was to have the left side and the left leg reglued and touched up.When delivered there was about an 1/8" gap between the leg and the front of the desk. It was not glued and it was not touched up and it still feels wobbly. The second piece, an old antique display cabinet, was to be rekeyed, some cracks filled, cleaned and polished.. Well, the cracks were filled. I don't know about the lock because it was delivered without the key. And as to cleaning? It has gummy residue on the glass front and on the wood in several places from what appears to be tape. When delivered there was actually a spider egg on the back side of the piece that I noticed when it was unloaded. I called to complain and they will send out a repairman next week. My question is, I sent it to them for repair, why was it delivered needing repair? I will not use this company again. Too bad, they used...
