This was our first time here at this campground. We stayed during the week (on a Tuesday - Wednesday) in the Fall (October) and we were thrilled. There were only 3 other families staying in the campground and they were all on the opposite side. The sites weren't labeled too clearly, it was tough to see exactly where we should set up. I don't think we set up in the proper spot but nobody was around so it worked just fine. We ended up right by the river, near what I guess is their 'beach'. You do need to check in, just down the road, which we didn't do (thought it was a no-contact check-in...completely wrong on my part). Staff did come by that evening to make sure we were supposed to be there. They were friendly, not upset at all, told us to have a great stay and that was it! The sites aren't really separate from each other, you can clearly see everything in the other sites around you. Not bad if you don't mind it, we prefer privacy so we were glad nobody else was there. Plenty of port-o-lets but it's a primitive site campground so no running water, no flushing toilets, no showers...which is fine. Again, primitive camping. There was a site across from us that had a ripped tent and some other items that had just been abandoned. Looked like it had been there a while, surprised it hadn't been picked up and disposed of. Other than that not too much trash. I would recommend putting trash cans or a dumpster somewhere. If they were there we didn't see any. It is close to the road, a train track is across the river (it is a live track) and not far from a highway / busy road (not from the area, looked like a highway to me). While it's not silent the road noise isn't too bad. Speaking of roads, the speed limit is 5 mph in the campground and you really have no choice but to do that...so many dips, holes, etc in the dirt driving path! Not a complaint, just know you will have to go slow and if your car is lowered you may have some issues. But who's camping in a lowered car? Would we stay here again? Maybe. Not on the weekend and not during the busy season when it's full...that's just not for us. We had a clean, safe place to stay with friendly people that came by to make sure we were supposed to be there. What more can you ask for?

So disappointed in how poorly run this livery is. We had a group of 7 reserve kayaks on Labor Day. Nobody checked our IDs when we checked-in, so anyone could have said they were a part of our reservation. The front desk gave us a paper to hold onto and give back at the end of our trip to ensure everyone was off the river before closing. There was no safety discussion with their customers and no mention that the river water levels were so low that you had to carry your kayaks/canoes across rocks at certain areas of the river - I live near Hocking so I wasn't shocked since I knew there hadn't been a lot of rain - but for anyone that traveled would have had no idea of the river conditions. A 2-3 hour trip took us 5 hours to get through because the water was so low. While the livery cannot control water conditions, they can control the communication to customers about this. We reached the end of the trip at 5pm and were greeted with no one. There was no one down by the river exit to help people get their kayaks/canoes/tubes out of the water. It was clear that no one had been working that area for a while because it was so backed up that our group couldn't reach the bank to dock. The photo I've attached shows only 1/3 of all the equipment left by the river. There were empty kayaks and canoes floating down the river because it was so crowded. Our group had to crawl over kayaks and canoes just to get to the bank. I'm shocked that this livery thinks it's acceptable to close early and let customers fend for themselves. When we reached the office and saw it was closed, we realized there was literally no one there to ensure their customers had exited the river safely and that everyone was accounted for. What's the point in giving people the paper at the beginning of the trip if there's no one there to collect it at the end? Someone who wasn't a part of our group was panicking because the office had held his car keys while he was on the water and he had no way to get them back since the office was closed and there were no employees around to assist. I've been kayaking more times than I can count and I've never experienced such carelessness in regards to their customer's safety. I'll take my business to Fox's livery and avoid this mess in the future.

We made reservations for 2 campsites over Labor Day weekend. We called to verify our reservations a week before and we were told we 'were all set'. When we arrived Friday night, the office was closed, the 2 livery employees just shrugged their shoulders when we asked a question and there was not a sign directing campers as to where to find the assigned sites and the sites themselves. When we were able to find the road to the campsites that was almost blocked completely by the canoe livery's parked vehicles. When making our reservations we asked to 1) back-to back campsites 2) electriicty and 3) a nearby water source. After asking a fellow camper where to find the site assignments we had sites 7 & 8 which were 1) NOT BACK-TO-BACK 2) NO ELECTRICITY and 3) NOT NEAR A WATER SOURCE. And to top this discovery, there was no one to help us. Unfortunately we had no cell phone signal and it was getting dark so reluctantly we had to set up for the night. The road to the bathrooms was NOT lit at all by the campground and was VERY dark and long. The road to the bathrooms was also part gravel and part dried rutty mud. Even a flashlight was not much help seeing where you were going or stepping, I felt very uncomfortable walking to the bathroom. The road had lights when you were almost to the canoe livery office. When we woke up, we found the campsites bug and insect infested. I expect bugs at a campground but not like this. Also both campsites had poison ivy all over them. Not to mention all the dead trees that need to be cut down before they fall on unsuspecting campers. On Saturday afternoon I talked wth Cybil and complained and she said "Oh you were suppose to be at the other campground." REALLY CYBIL then why I ask were we assigned to this HELL HOLE!, By this time our camping group just REALLY wanted to leave, but since we do not live locally, we decided to camp one more miserable night and boy were we sorry, a storm came through Saturday night and Sunday morning. Needless to say we left miserable, wet and angry. I will NEVER come back to your campground in my life time. It was poorly run and run down. Cybil said "they NEVER had any complaints before...and that they pass inspections every year. As soon as I find out who inspects their campgrounds a letter will be written to them. This campground should be SHUT DOWN. Hocking Hills Adventures has absolutely no business running a campground. I will never come here again and I will be sure to tell anyone I know who is going to Hocking Hills to avoid the Hocking...

I could not be more disappointed in my entire experience. I made my reservation ahead of time and upon arrival saw easily over a hundred people gathered waiting for busses in large crowds. Out of over a hundred people I can count on two hands the number of people wearing masks. You were completely over booked and I had to wait almost 2 hours past my reservation to get on a bus even though I showed up almost an hour early to check in. I was scared for my health the entire time and when I asked about a refund I was told you are unable to provide them. Even after this experience it continued to get worse. The bus driver did not have a mask and no one on the bus besides me and my friend wore them on the bus. The driver never even asked or suggested for passengers to wear one. This is hilarious considering on google under updates your business you specifically state “face coverings for all customers will be REQUIRED during bus or shuttle transportation.” After getting off the bus the kid working told me to get my own kayak and drag it to the river. I am a fit young female and while I am capable of doing this and did, it was incredibly rude to have no help with this whatsoever. My kayak was dirty, obviously unsanitized, missing both foot rests, and still had garbage in it. My ore was bent and obviously very old. After starting my trip I quickly realized that again because you overbooked I could not even kayak through the river at all. There were so many people stopped and clogging the river and I could do nothing besides try not to run into them as I went along. Not for even a moment was I away from huge groups of your customers. It was a crowded party the entire time and was and one of the most stressful experiences I have had in a long time. I could not wait for it to be over the entire trip. When I got back I was not greeted my a employee instead I had to stand in yet another crowd of people without masks while standing in disgusting mud and not able to move. No one helped me pull my kayak in. No one grabbed my kayak. No one said have a nice day. Nothing. This was literally the worst experience I could have imagined and I will NEVER return to your establishment. The lack of professionalism was appalling and the fact that we are in the middle of a pandemic and you obviously do not care about your customers health or well...

I'm updating my review as all of the issues I experienced about 2 weeks ago seem to have been fixed or addressed. We took trip 2 this Saturday and it was AWESOME. We had so much fun and the weather was perfect. Most of the staff were expedient, courteous, and helpful. The bus driver we had this time, I think her name was Katrina? I can't remember but she was just great, very funny and talkative with us. I hope she knows that she made our day better. Megan at the front was also amazing, she is so welcoming and professional in the way she presents herself.

People can say what they want, but this place is a little gem when they're on top of things and being proactive. I've created so many memories here and I plan to make more. Unless you're someone who needs the stars to align to enjoy yourself, you will have fun here. I highly recommend trip 2, but even that feels way too short for me. Yes the river is low sometimes, but you're literally doing a water sport so why do you expect not to get wet? They can't control the river.

Everything below this part is from my last visit.

The only bad experience on the river was from a group taking a trip with a different livery down the road. They brought a 100 pound dog with them and it was not friendly. It chased me and tried to capsize my boat. I think dogs of this size should be outright banned on the river, this presented a significant drowning risk to myself. I do carry a firearm, and I almost felt like I might have to shoot the dog. Just don't bring your unruly pets to the river if they are going to aggressively chase patrons and you can't control it. Don't be the person who ruins other people's day, keep the thing at home.

We just took the 7 mile trip today and it was pretty awesome! I've been coming here for years and it's still a fantastic spot for a relaxing river trip!! Everyone is usually fair and easy going if you are in return, and they have it very streamlined for the most part.

The bus driver Cathy was great. She is humorous, friendly, and has a special energy about her that is inviting. She should honestly be at the front desk instead of anyone else, she would shine but she shines as a bus driver as well.

I do wish the kayaks were a little more maintained. The seats are also hell on your spine so bring a cushion or something and your trip...
