Does Millstone BBQ Make Ohio’s Best Barbecue? #bbq #fyp

Let me start by saying that although this restuarant is not listed as such, they have my permission to call themselves a steakhouse also. My wife and I came down from our cabin to enjoy an early dinner and decided on the Millstone after looking at some of the other offerings in town. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by an exceptionally polite young man who walked us to our table and recommended that we try the Carolina Pork Roll appetizer, he was excited about the suggestion so we decided "why not". When our server "Reagan" introduced herself to us, my wife ordered a top-shelf" margarita, we ordered the Pork Roll as suggested and since we had our hearts set on steak I ordered the Ribeye, and my wife ordered the Sirloin. I realize that ordering steak at a BBQ place is blasphemy, but our hearts were set although I have to admit the scent of quality "Q" in the air was really making me question my choice. Our steaks were cooked to perfection, the staff was simply amazing, my wifes drink put a smile on her face and the Pork Roll was everything the host said it would be. We are visiting from Michigan so not in the area very often, but we have already promised ourselves that when we return we will definitely be coming back here where I will be having the Brisket, Pork, and probably a little of everything else.

We were hiking in Hocking Hills, and Maps said Millstone was the best BBQ in the area. They claim to smoke everything "in house", so that sounded like our kind of joint. We had our dog with us, so we got take out. We ordered the Meat Sampler to get an idea of what they offered, and a Cowboy Burger for the dog. Brisket - pretty bad. If you are expecting "Texas Style" brisket like Franklin in TX, Slows in Detroit, or Harp's in MS... you are going to be very disappointed. The brisket had an amazing smoke ring, but no tasty bark, or yellow rendered fat. Just dry, flavorless nothing. Imagine an overcooked pot roast. Smoked Turkey - excellent! Juicy white meat, great texture. Make sure you try this. Smoked Sausage - really great. The texture of kabasa, with good smoke and spices. Pulled Pork - really great. This held up to pulled pork from anywhere. Pulled Chicken - good and juicy. Great flavor. Ribs - nice "wet" style. Good sauce and the right amount of chew. Cowboy Burger - great looking sear on the outside, but dang near raw on the inside. Only 1 slice of cheese. I would have sent it back if we were dining in. Tomato was fresh and sweet. Sides: Mac N Cheese - kinda OK, but I would not order it again. No crunchy smokey top, no flavor really. Pretty bland compared to most BBQ Mac. Salad - good. Lettuce was fresh, Ranch was homemade. I know, who would order a salad at a BBQ joint? Cornbread - excellent! We did not order it, but sure am glad we got it. Mini-muffin size, moist, served with whipped butter. Done right. Baked Beans - ordered, but did not receive. French Fries - ordered, but did not receive. BBQ Sauce - "Open Pit" with some extra spicy-ness. All and all, kind of a mixed bag, with some great food (and some not so great). Worth a stop, but be careful you get all the food you paid for before you leave.

Our last visit was sadly below expectations based on past years' experiences. A BBQ restaurant should be proud of their brisket of all things. Two of us got the brisket and it was bone dry. I folded it over and squeezed it and not even one drop of juice was visible. I will say the pulled pork as a replacement was terrific! Sweet potato fries were also bottom of the basket, and were shriveled and dried out, apparently the last batch. Baked sweet potatoes were substituted and good. Our server was kind and friendly, but clearly overworked (mentioned working a double) and overall the service was very slow. We initially had almost an hour wait after being promised 30-40 minutes for an outdoor table. Interestingly, I watched the hostess type in 45 min. as the quoted time, even though she told me otherwise. Once seated (after asking for an update), it was another long wait for basic drinks (water), and a mixed drink showed up with just ice and garnish, no liquid. Food came out oddly spaced apart and also slow. We were there 2-1/2 hours before some had to leave. The splitting of the check was confusing as we were growing impatient and standing to leave. Items were not adjusted as promised (still charged for brisket not pork, etc.). Honestly, there should have been some additional compensation, rather than only a $3 adjustment. It took around 25 minutes to settle a 3-way bill before we finally were able to pay and get out of there. Hoping this was just a bad day, but I won't be in a rush to go back.

We had driven by Millstone many times over the last few years, but had never stopped to try it. It’s a very attractive building. So, we were in the area once again and decided to give it a shot. We ordered the nachos with pulled pork and the ribs and brisket. We had high hopes with the complimentary corn bread, while small in size, they packed a punch with flavor. Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way….The brisket was NOT real brisket, maybe it was a cut of brisket but is blasphemy to call it brisket. It was thin, dry, tasteless and had NO bark whatsoever. It amazes me that people comment on how good it is, even in my wildest imagination this would never be true brisket. I’m beginning to believe Ohioans have never experienced real brisket, as I’ve had similar dreck in other restaurants in Ohio. It is NOT real brisket. The ribs were fairly meaty and tender, the two bbq sauces were quite good also. The my two sides were baked beans and fries. The beans were thick had good flavor but might’ve been a bit too thick. The fries were very crispy and probably the second best thing we had next to the ribs. The nachos were a nice size portion , but the pork was dry. They would’ve been pretty good if the pork was moist. Our service was so-so as our server was also the bar tender (which I usually avoid since, let’s face it, the bar is their main focus) Overall the experience was mediocre, would we eat there again? If there wasn’t another choice, but it’s not a place we’d seek out.

Just walked out. We had a poor experience years ago and decided to give it another chance tonight. Hostess got lippy about the reason we was walking out. We aren’t in the wrong. We put our name in to eat told 10 minute wait. We sat and waited for a table. Another couple come in at least 5 minutes after us. They said they could have immediate seating full service at the bar or it would be 15 minute wait. They said they would wait for a table and they sat down. We continue to wait at least 10 minutes or so and they call those people for their table. They was a party of 2. We are a party of 2. Why the heck are they being seated before us. Why??? We are not in the wrong. It’s simple customer service. It wasn’t busy. When we said why we was leaving she made some remark about the amount of people. I said they are a party of two. We are a party of two. She said they can only clean off so many tables at once. Your table is being cleaned now! I said we was here before them and you took them over us. Roll the eyes and said whatever ma’am. No it’s not a whatever ma’am. It should been I’m so sorry ma’am for our mistake. Please stay and have an appetizer on us or something. But no it’s a lippy remark. That is absolutely horrible customer service. I can handle a mistake. Can’t handle horrible customer service. We will never try this place again. Why the heck it’s rated well is beyond me but this isn’t how you treat customers.
