My 2.5 year old daughter loves watching the planes land and take off at the Van Nuys Airport observation area. On this visit we showed up in the middle of the week, and it was pretty mellow. There were a few people on their lunch breaks, and another kid watching the aircraft as well. There isn’t a ton of shade, so sunscreen before you go in the summer months. Nothing spectacular, but it is the closest that the public will get to aircraft in this day and age.

Very disappointed, website said it was open and when we arrived the gate was locked. This was on July 1, 2021. Seven of us; four grandsons (2 - 2 1/2), parents and grandparents. This is a two instead of a one because we could watch planes take of and land from the outer parking lot.

Very good place to take pictures or just enjoy the planes taking off and landing at KVNY. It’s easily accessible and has an area to drop off kids during your time there! Would highly recommend to Avgeeks or just normal people.

A real hidden gem in the San Fernando Valley. Right at the edge of the taxiway, the Observation area has informative kiosks with the history of the airport, a speaker that broadcasts a feed from the Control Tower, a shaded picnic area, and playground for the kids. Usually open from dawn to dusk, it's a great place to bring the little ones or just if you need to get away for a moment. Entrance is gained along the alley just to the south of the fire...
