This was an absolute disaster. I work weekend days so going during the day for Lights Under Louisville was not an option for us. We drove 2 hours from Indianapolis with 6 kids (combined families). We waited in line on the interstate ramp for 3.5 hours. It took an hour and a half to go 900 feet. No joke. Nobody would let the cars merge from the 264 ramp onto Poplar Level Rd. And there was absolutely NO traffic police/control UNTIL you get to the actual road the cavern is on. We had no idea when we were in line it would be a 4.5 hour wait just to get to the entrance. We got to the ramp at 6:30pm and finally left the cavern at 11:30pm. We fed the kids snacks on the way expecting to get dinner after we were done. Needless to say we were looking for a place to get food at midnight when we finally got on the interstate to head back to Indianapolis. Round trip it was an 11 hour car ride for a 30 min light show. We got home at 3am. They need to limit the amount of tickets between 5pm-close. This was absolute torture. Had we known at the time we got to the ramp we would be looking at a 4.5 hour wait just to get to the cavern we would have just called it a $50 loss on the tickets and done something else. Staff needs to look up Winterlights at Newfileds in Indianapolis and see how they do their timed tickets and learn a few things. Or maybe hire the Chick-fil-A drive through teams to direct traffic..they'd have everyone out in an hour. All in all, this is a core memory for 8 people we don't really care to experience ever again. Which is sad because it has so much potential to be an amazing...
Read moreI'm disappointed for a lot of reasons. First of all, I had read a lot of reviews saying purchase tickets online ahead of time because it's more at the gate. Okay, I can do that. So I purchased tickets for my family and I to go on Sunday the 22nd. When it came time to checkout I did purchase the insurance because you know, things happen. Well wouldn't you know it I got food poisoning that night, so I was so sick the day we were supposed to go. I was disappointed, and my kids were ultra disappointed we couldn't go because mom could barley move. We live in Lexington so there was no way I was making it. At least I purchased insurance I thought. Maybe we can get a refund and try again another day. So I log on to request my refund. Please tell me why in the world I have to upload and submit two documents supporting proof of illness as well a doctors note to get my money back?! And why didn't they make that clear upon purchase or I wouldn't have even bought the dang insurance. That's more than I have to submit for my work! It's lights under a cave people...I mean it looks fun but it is not THAT serious. Plus people don't always go to the doctor when sick, especially when it resolves after 24 hours because no one can afford that. So needless to say we didn't get to go and I didn't get my money back even though I purchased the insurance. We were super looking forward to going because I've heard great things, but I probably won't purchase tickets or attempt...
Read moreA very fun and worthwhile experience. I believe the best way to experience the lights is going on a weekday and/or going early in the day. It's a great experience any time of day as there's no natural light to worry about in a cavern. ;) I also recommend taking the Christmas Express/tram where you have an open top view and do not have to be distracted by pacing or paying attention to who is in front of you. The cavern is a little tricky to get to, but not horrible. Once you're near the destination GPS may not be helpful so just keep an eye on all the signs placed for the event. If you take the Christmas Express and have arrived in the parking lot simply walk to the shelter and follow the yellow footprints. The Christmas Express is scheduled so no wait time and the tour was around 40 minutes long. The souvenir shop is cozy and most items are reasonably priced. Don (the conductor for the Christmas Express) was great and reminded me a lot of tour guides from my childhood (I'm 50) and definitely provided a sense of nostalgia. All the staff were friendly and helpful.
Order tickets in advance. Restroom(s) present. Snacks and drinks available. Exhaust fumes weren't noticeable/well ventilated. Music was loud, but not intolerable. Temperature in the cavern is around 58-60 degrees and the tram moves somewhat slowly so a hoodie or sweater will have you warm enough. Keep in mind your phone will have zero service...
