Clif is a true artist and expert with decades of history and know how to deal with antique neon. He is pleasant to deal with and honest about the requirements. I provided him with two rare clocks, one working and another needing a replacement of the old style to match the working one. He presented my options and we came up with a fair price. One could not ask for more! I hope to go to one of Random Neon's classes some day.
Edit-Some months later, we went to a Neon Weekend! The class filled up quickly, so we had to wait for an available spot, but it was well worth the wait and cost. It's amazing that people accept "LED neon" as a neon sign. It's nothing like the real thing. There is great thought, technique and also satisfaction in the craftsmanship that comes from a real high quality neon sign made with glass, which doesn't compare to fake neon made on a machine.
The benefits of the Neon Weekend are small classes, expert teaching and coaching by Clif and his teaching assistant(s), and the ability to come home with something truly special. You can say "I made that" with pride vs. ordering and waiting for something from overseas which may cost less in electricity to operate but the environmental cost to make in the first place is questionable. You're also dealing with neon or argon gas excited by electricity in a glass tube that you bent into your shape you planned which is just so much more interesting than a polymer tube lit by semiconductor material. High quality things take time and effort. I didn't think bending glass tubes would be easy. It's definitely not, but then again, most things that take time and effort are worth it. I also had the opportunity to meet interesting and nice people. That's...
Read moreBoth a technician and artist, Cliff was able to do what other neon specialists couldn’t when it came to restoring this vintage sign from a multi-generation family-owned business. Time and time again, I was told by experts that the damage couldn’t be reliably repaired, and the best course of action would be to bend an entirely new tube, effectively remaking the sign and destroying its history in the process as far as I saw it. The piece sat broken for years until I received a text after reaching out to Random Neon which simply read, “I can fix it.” That was Cliff on the other end of the phone who understood what I was hoping to achieve and more importantly respected the spirit of preservation behind this goal. He “got it,” and I knew I was in capable hands.
As it turned out, the job was more difficult than he expected, requiring a great deal of time and care to address all the external and internal issues the sign had after more than 60 years of continuous service. He attended to them one by one and brought the piece back to life without compromising its provenance. A true master at his craft, Cliff’s work far exceeded my expectations, with a fee which was more than fair given all the time, attention and materials involved. If you are in need of an artisan with the experience, skill and preservationist sensibility to take on the kind of jobs others won’t, Cliff is the specialist for you. Thanks again Sir....
Read moreThese guys are awesome! We have been having various troubles with our neon sign for the past year, and had repairs done by another company, but there always seemed to be something else a few months down the line, and it was becoming both frustrating and expensive!... anyway, a few of our neighbors have had signs made by Random Neon so we gave them a call. Cliff responded quickly, came and evaluated the situation and said he'd be back in a couple of days with a temporary replacement 'SALE' sign for our window, so as not to leave us neon-less! This was amazing as we always hate not having the neon sign up in the window! True to his word he returned with the sale sign - he made it from 'random' neon pieces they had in their workshop, and it was super cool and funky and suited our vintage clothing shop (we were having an end of winter sale, so it was perfect!). Within a week or so, he had returned again with the repaired sign, and had modified the plexi it was attached to, adding buffers to stop it from tapping the window in heavy winds - the reason he thought it might be fracturing and breaking somewhat regularly! Their price seemed very reasonable, their customer service was first class, and Cliffs passion for neon was refreshing and inspiring! We would highly recommend using them for any neon related jobs, and we definitely intend to have them create another sign for inside our shop further...
