In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, a simple glass of wine is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends. Yesterday, I experienced something new: an extraordinary vodka from a singularly unexpected, Irish source. To say that both the drink and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine liquor is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now brewing at the Lanthier Winery, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest distiller in the Midwest. I will be returning to the Lanthier Winery soon,...

We stopped in and had a tasting with Dennis. We sampled sweets, drys and their WineShine! Dennis was friendly and offered up chilled pours like a boss! Didn’t care for the Jalapeño Wine Shine, but loved the dry Chambourcin. My wife enjoyed the sweet reds and we left with 2 bottles. My son enjoyed the lemon liqueur and bought a bottle.
Honestly we would have bought more, but at more than $22/bottle of wine and slushie drinks at $15/cup when we can get comparable for $10 or under at home (St. Julian) we had a difficult time grabbing more.
The atmosphere was nice and Dennis was friendly. The resident mouser cat let us have a pet. We would return for that alone! :-)
It was an overall nice experience, although a...
