Don't be fooled by the quaint surrounding of where the Museum is sitting. When you stop by, plan on no less than an hour and a half to see everything. The number of artifacts and history in Marietta is astounding. There is a small charge for the museum which will be either $5.00 or $10.00. I paid $10.00 and I also got a guide brochure for what I would see. You pay this upon entering and the gift shop is right there as well. Your first leg of the museum is right across from the gift store.
Founded in 1788, this city was the first settlement in the Northwest Territory. The library also gets its name from the fort that was originally built here - Campus Martius. They have a small diorama of the fort for you to view. You will find this in the re-constructed original home of General Rufus Putman within the museum. There are a total of 3 floors of memorabilia for you to see. The bottom floor is mostly the more 'Modern' history while the other 2 deal with the beginning history of the city.
This is a must stop for anyone interest in early American history. This is especially true since this was the launching pad for our move out...
Read moreThis is the museum that highlights the founding of the northwest territory, and the first colony of the United States of America. Carved from this territory, were 6 states now known collectively as the midwest. These states are Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnisota. In addition to the history of the NW territory, other topics such as native peoples, the town of Marietta, the prohibition of the slave trade as well as regional migration in and out of Appalachia are covered. The museum houses original structures from the founding as well as artifacts of interest. It is the site of the 1st Masonic lodge (founded in 1776 as a military lodge) meeting in the territory. This is still an active lodge which meets in town. I highly recommend visiting this museum. They have something for everyone and lots of unique things pertaining to the...
Read moreRude arrival. No one at counter to greet or for admissions. After 10 minutes yelled 'hello'. Heard voices. They finally came out. We guided ourselves not knowing where to start, pay, anything. No one asked for admissions. Finally went to counter and paid, then they offered a tour of oldest house. Still no one directed us. They had a script but could not answer questions of things we were seeing. It seemed very disorganized for a Tuesday afternoon. There were 6 other people in addition to us. 2pm. The museum was very good. Lots of info and displays. Directional signs would have been helpful or 'guides in a meeting' and info on what to do while we...
