In my situation, the management regarding policies is the antonym to the Aloha spirit. A harsh situation left me without a home for four days. I work in native habitat restoration, and flew here in August. Gratefully I found places to camp for ~ $25 a night at Kipahulu, Waiʻānapanapa State Park and there's other places like Hosmer Grove, Polipoli and many other places when you search - with hiking, waterfalls immersed in nature, the ocean, wildlife - not in a rough part of the town of Kahului. You can also rent a car for close to $200 for a week from Maui Cruisers Cheap Car Rental at 808-283-0688. I was referred to by Howzit Hostel to go to Banana Bungalow, because I didn't have a flight leaving the island. Howzit Hostel stated that Banana Bungalow has accepted every person they referred to go there in this situation - proof is attached to the review. I was exhausted, had endured vandalism, lack of sleep and an attempt of a tenant at my house to attack me. My boss recommended I stay at a hostel until I could move into a new home in four days. The staff at the desk would not take me in. He kept repeating the same thing, which also happened in the email. I understand, that he won't accept someone without a flight out. The problem is he wouldn't give me a refund, even with the harsh events and a referral from another hostel - in which all people were accepted here that were previously referred. I explained to management it was Thanksgiving, I needed a place to stay. I asked if they wouldn't provide the room I had already paid for, to please refund me the money. Humanity wasn't present in this situation. There was no reply to my email. The representative had said the flight out/backpacker rule was 'everywhere' on the website and it clearly isn't. If you scroll just to the book now buttons, you will see a person can easily book a room without seeing the rule that its a backpacker/proof of flight out - only hostel. I was exhausted and was going off a recommendation - and quickly booked the room having faith in people. You have to scroll down beyond booking a room to see this rule. I asked for them to put it at the top of the website. They didn't respond to that suggestion, which would clarify the rules to potential customers. Even here, I'm asking - please refund me the money for my room. If anyone in management is kind of enough to over turn this harsh attitude - please state it for everyone to see here. A kind heart in this situation would still be gratefully accepted here. Its so sad to read another person who was here to help in rebuilding Lahaina was also left with no place to stay on his birthday during Christmas because of the management here. So heartless..........

🌴 Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel: A Tropical Oasis of Kindness and Adventure!!! At the Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel, kindness and warmth enveloped me from the moment I stepped through the door. The workers and volunteers, with island spirits, greeted me with genuine smiles and open hearts. Their helpfulness extended beyond mere hospitality; it felt like connecting with old friends! The free tours were my passport to wonders!! The Road to Hana unfolded like a dream—a winding coastal journey through lush rainforests, waterfalls, and hidden spots. Each stop etched memories... Paia Beach Day was pure bliss. The turquoise waters beckoned, and I surrendered to the sun’s warm embrace. Sand clung to my toes as I watched kite surfers ride the waves, their laughter harmonizing with the ocean’s rhythm. And then came.... Keg night!! A global symphony of accents filled the common area. We played cards, shared stories, and laughed until the stars blinked awake. Strangers became confidantes, and the world felt smaller, more interconnected. In this tropical haven, everyone belonged—from the backpacker from Germany to the surfer from New Zealand. We were wanderers, united by the aloha spirit, weaving memories under the swaying palms. Banana Bungalow: Where kindness blooms, adventures thrive, and hearts find their home. 🌺🌅

First time in Hawaii, I was looking for a private room to stay in. Many of the hotels and airbnb were in the $300/day range and I just didn't want to pay that. I then book a private room here for half as much. It's not the nicest hostel i've stayed at but it suits my needs for a place to sleep and stay. I had two beds in my room. No AC but had two fans. It was warm but the fans did the job. There are several private restroom with baths and one larger bath with several showers inside. The backyard is a large gathering place. They also have limited washer/dryer but were taken when I was there. Biggest issue with this place is parking. I parked on the street and had to be careful where to park as there are many tow away zones. The road next to the hostel is very busy even at night. My window faced the road. Lots of foot traffic too. Getting inside the hostel was also annoying. Had to call the front desk to be let in and hope they pick up. But once they do, they'll give you a code to get in through the side gate. I saw flyers for guided tours which is awesome if you're a solo traveler. Tons of people were in the backyard. Great area to meet and make friends. Overall, not the best but not terrible. Definitely was an experience.

First of all - the free tours are great, they basically have one for everything you would want to do in Maui, our tour guides Bernie and Eddie were so friendly and did such a good job of the tours. Good party vibe (but quiet at 10pm so you can totally sleep) and you can meet lots of people from all over the world. For the actual accommodation though this is 2 stars, the room is so hot (no AC) and there were a few small ants and cockroaches in the halls and in the room. There is a fan also in the room but its so dusty looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in years. The bathrooms are constantly dirty (black mould on the shower curtains, dirty muddy bath mats always) and one was always out of order. They also don’t supply towels so bring your own. They do have a washing machine on site as well as a big kitchen which was always clean! The location is in a rougher part of Maui, far from any beach or really any restaurants so just make sure you rent a car or do the tours. Hawaii in general is really expensive and this is still a good option for the price!

Great set of people and amazing vibe. Perfectly suited for people who love to mingle with others from different parts of the if the world. It can be a but loud at times but it’s tolerable. Washrooms can be a bit messy depending on the time of the day. But it’s a hostel so understandable. Overall, decent place for your budget friendly trip!
