True Aloha spirit, local flavor
We have just returned to California, following our wonderful stay at the Wailuku Guesthouse. And yes, the rooms are small, but everything we needed was there. Other than small, I would also use the words "cozy", "warm", "welcoming" and full of the true aloha spirit. In fact, after a few days we even started calling it "home", imagining how it would've been so awesome to find a tiny studio apartment like this when we were starting out in life. We enjoyed it as a bit of nostalgia, and appreciated all the little touches that made it more personal than your typical huge, cold, expensive!, fancy-shmancy corporate hotel room. But to each their own.
Ms. Maureen is a gracious host. She made a point to meet us personally and chat awhile, even though she is extremely busy keeping up with maintenance and duties to keep the rooms and grounds sparkling clean. The landscaping and pool are amazingly beautiful. We felt safe and welcome the whole time we were there, and can't wait to return next year.
The people in Wailuku town were also very friendly, and businesses open despite pressures of the mask & vax requirements. Maui residents are resilient and care about their community.
If you want a taste of the "real Maui", and enjoy local flavor, I would highly recommend Wailuku Guesthouses.
To the bitter, negative reviewers, I would say, read the cancellation policies as I did, BEFORE you reply "I agree." There is nothing hidden in fine print, it is all there. It's very understandable how they have only a few rooms and are a small operation, so it makes sense to have a 30 day cancellation policy that hello, you AGREED to, so please don't try to say you...
Read moreWe stayed in the Garden Ohana for 2 weeks Jan-Feb 2025. This is an ideal accommodation for 2 couples... Two separate bedrooms spaced well from the living/dining area with generous kitchen/food prep space. The suite and pool/patio area are very clean, comfortable, and well-appointed with lots of extras available (parking, boogie boards, car-size cooler, beach chairs, snorkel gear, beach towels). The location is a quiet neighborhood close to the Kahalui airport, and centrally located so it's easy to get to other parts of the island by car.||Maureen obviously loves what she does! She answered messages promptly both before our arrival and during our stay. She often stopped to chat with us and shared a variety of local information and tips for first-time visitors to Maui. Our welcome email was very detailed (directions from the airport, self check-in instructions) and full of useful information (recommendations for stuff to bring). Unfortunately, we received this email after we were already en route from central Canada. We could have used more of the information if we had received it a day or two earlier (while we were still at home / packing for our trip).||We would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone interested in going to Maui. Thank you, Maureen, for making our first trip to Maui...
Read moreThe house was originally owned by a military officer in WWII. It looks like it has been kept up pretty well. (I restore old houses). The rooms are situated up a narrow set of stairs entering from the back corner of the house. If you are unsteady on stairs, take your time. You have to go up three stairs to open the screen door. It's all they can do with the space available, so it's good. Just different. Up the stairs you enter into short hallway with three rooms. The door handles should probably be upgraded or improved to provide a less rattling closure. But they work and the locks are good. The room (plantation) has a great king bed, and the mattress is wonderful. The bathroom is nicely updated. Though I don't care for the cobble stone floor. The backyard pool and covered patio area are very secluded and nice, given you are across the street from a school. We heard some basketball playing after dark, but that was actually very nice - with a nice Local feel to the place. In old part of town. Parking was good. I did not like it that it appears we're under some sort of covid protocol where we didn't even meet our hosts. The "contactless" process is ridiculous. Annoying and unnecessary. We will stay here again. Love...
