We were searching high and low for a filling and flavorful meal when we came to The Empanada Lady. I ordered the vegetable curry empanada, a side of jerked wings and jerked chicken with coconut rice and black beans. Everything was hot and fresh when it arrived to the patio table, the jerk wings came with crisp raw veggies on the side and a choice of sauce, they were falling of the bone tender and juicy. The wings had the authentic spice I've been craving since leaving the East Coast, which has plenty of delicious Caribbean restaurants. The vegetable curry empanada was on point! All the flavors married together smooth and hot on the inside and flaky on the outside. We also had a freshly made mint lemonade that was just the right amount of tart and sweet. Bae and I talk about this meal often.
Also, the bright smiling Woman who took our order made the experience so much more personal & pleasant. We look forward to her good vibes and to the reopening of the indoor seating space, the architecture, of what I could see from the outside was rich and beautiful. . Be sure to marvel at the beautiful Hibiscus flowers growing to the left of the...
Read moreI met Sara - The Empanada Lady at the Maui swap meet last year 3/19. We loved her food and she told us she was opening up a restaurant soon. Since I am in Maui this year 4/20, I decided to look her up and sure enough found her restaurant in Wailuku. Because of the COVID-19 situation we could only order take out so I didn't get to see the inside. Staying in Kihei, it was a 15 min ride to her place and she timed it so I would get the food piping hot. Before I drove off, I ate one of the empanadas in the car - it was soooo good - piping hot with her secret sauce made the drive home sweeter. There is only 1 main dish every day currently and I ordered the coconut curry chicken. The empanadas were buy 3 get 1 free so I ordered the pork, beef, chicken and the free one was the banana for dessert. So worth the drive and I'll put on my things to do a visit or two here every year when I come to Maui. Not only is the food excellent but very reasonably priced.
Mahalo Sara - you have a very special gift. Keep on cooking and good luck in your business - hope things pick up after...
Read moreI've never been to the Caribbean, but feel I got a taste of what it would be like . The open air setting, the vibrant colors, the toe tapping music, while feasting on a menu that can either take you to the Dominican Republic w its roasted pork and gandula rice, or Jamaica w its Jerk chicken, and of course the owner/chef's infamous empanadas. I tried the beef, pork, and veggie w a side of chimichurri and truly enjoyed every bite. Lightly crispy, perfectly seasoned, and filling. I also tried a plate of roasted DR pork and rice, and a side of croquettes. Every bite tasted like home, or like being invited into a friend's home for a meal. The Empanada Lady is such a treat in Wailuku and just completes the variation of places to eat AND, its reasonably priced. YOU MUST GIVE THIS PLACE A TRY! Perfect setting for families, a group of friends, or table for 2. And don't forget the cerveza...
