Waikulu Distillery — Attraction in Maui

This is an awesome agave spirit distillery. Stopped in and was greeted by Viv. She's very knowledgeable and friendly. Did the tasting, found the Agave spirits to be of high quality and tasted great! Viv recommended we stop by at Cafe Mambo, where she said they feature a Bloody Maria with their pepper infused Spirit they also have a good breakfast burrito. The next day we did just that and boy was she absolutely right! Best Bloody Maria I have ever had, the breakfast burrito was amazing as well. After our tasting Viv asked Paul (the Master Distiller) show us behind the scenes. He was very friendly and knowledgeable on his craft. He didn't have to take us behind the scenes as it was a non tour day but he happily did. We had a great time talking with Viv and Paul. The Agave spirit is legit and good! We visited Waikulu Distillery today. Because they are so new, they’re not yet able to offer tastings. HOWEVER, their master distiller gave us an impromptu tour, and explained the processes used to create their products. We bought 2 bottles without tasting them first: Ohana Reserve, and Smoke Pepa. We couldn’t wait to taste them, so we opened them, and we are SOOOO glad we did, because now we’re going to buy more before we leave the island. These people are extremely talented in their distilling skills, going so far as to develop their own yeast specifically for fermenting agave. The flavors they achieve are truly impressive and unique. The best way I can describe the Ohana Reserve is the flavor equivalent of the scent just after a rainstorm: fresh, new, rejuvenating. This gem of an operation absolutely deserves the 5 stars that it has. If the scale went higher, the rating would follow. Joyfully friendly people, magical property, beautiful and innovative facilites. And then, as you head in for a tasting, you’re trying to lower your expectations and anticipation because maybe it’s all smoke and mirrors and you don’t want to be disappointed.

But the agave spirits are incredible!! No let-down here for even a moment. Everything is unique. Familiar, but fun and different and exotic. And all extremely high quality. Hyper-local, sustainable, and done with precision. Perfect.
