I needed some African attire for our Black History service at church, so I asked Google where in Memphis could I purchase some. Several results came up such as Steinmart and some stores I wasn't familiar with. I scrolled a little farther and saw The African Place. The name is what drew me in first. Then I clicked on the photos and was impressed by what I saw. I immediately called my daughter to get up and go with me. From the moment I walked in, I knew I was going to buy something. We were there for over an hour, looking at clothes, trying on clothes and admiring the beautifully unique jewelry and home decor. I ended up buying a dashiki and a head wrap, as well as some Shea butter. What impressed me the most was the various bolts of African fabric that was available for people who either sew or has someone to sew for them. I wish they had some patterns for sale to go along with the fabric. That would be awesome. As with any place of business, there's always room for improvement. I felt that my buying experience could have been better with a few modifications and accommodations. Hence, the clothing items should be categorized and clearly labeled by size. Also, the dress ensembles catered to small sized women, whereas the dashikis went all the way to an 8x. I was disappointed that inside the label of my dashiki it read, "made in China", yet it was still pretty. Even though the dresses were a bit pricey, they were beautiful. More plus sizes would be quite welcome. It would increase sales because we wouldn't have to shop online and pay expensive shipping fees. I will be returning to The African Place for some jewelry I saw that will go with some of my regular outfits as well as, some decor pieces that I must have. If you want African items, The African Place is the...
Read moreI found this business on TikTok when I was looking for things to do in Memphis. I knew this establishment would be a perfect activity for my crew. Wherever we go we want to patronize Black owned businesses and learn something about our people or culture.
My two friends stumbled upon it riding around the city and told me about it to which I showed them it was on my itinerary of things to do.
The place is actually what looks like a former home turned into a shop. I love it because I already know there is going to be something in there that I cannot find anywhere else. I was absolutely correct đŻ. As soon as you step in the door you get this warm feeling like you stepped into someone's home. The person that was there welcomed us in and let us just browse as much as we wanted.
There is a book section. My God if I had the money I would have purchased so much. All kind of books, wall appliques, clothing, jewelry, masks, dresses, cloth material, healing herbs, salves, soaps, Shea butter, candy, walking sticks, statues and so much more. You could really spend a lot of time in there which we did. Please...
Read moreThis place is beautiful! I went there with the intentions of getting Shea Butter, and came out with so much more. The ambience was breathtaking! The African Place has everything you need, to take care of your spirituality needs; from incense, to meditation needs; from crystals to chakra charts; books, jewelry, African inspired clothing, rbg flags, Shea Butter, black African soap, oils. etc. On my visit, I bought some Shea Butter (in liquid form), two pairs of earrings (one in the shape of Africa in rbg colors, and the other all Black pair with an Ankh in a circle), and four crystals (obsidian, bloodstone, amethyst, and sodalite). My experience was great, and I look forward to purchasing more crystals...
