We were visiting from Idaho and went to Wahlburgers Wild inside the Bass Pro Shop at the Memphis Pyramid today to celebrate a special occasion. Our teenage son, who has been hospitalized here in Memphis for the last five months, was given a rare day pass for his birthday. He chose the Pyramid and Bass Pro Shop as where he wanted to go during his short time with us. While inside he saw Wahlburgers Wild and asked if we could go there for lunch. He was excited to visit and feel a bit of normalcy, even just for lunch.
When we asked the waiter if they do anything for birthdays, he said they’d sing to him. Our son was a bit embarrassed, he's a teenager, but also clearly looking forward to the attention, after being away from family and friends for so long, it meant something to him. He even commented how cool it was that the Wahlbergs have a big family (like us, we have 10 kids), and that made him feel an extra connection.
As for the food, I ordered the BBQ Bacon Burger and onion rings. What I received looked nothing like the menu photo. I know nothing ordered ever looks just like the picture, but this didn't look right at all. It was missing anything looking fresh. The avocado was brownish and pasty, and only 2 or 3 jalapenos. Not the end of the world, but worthy of asking the waiter if I had received the correct burger. His only response was, yes, do you want to order something else or talk to a manager? I wanted to know if I got the burger as it was supposed to be. If he was unable to answer this then I guess I will speak to the manager.
The manager, who was polite and friendly, came over and did insist that everything was fresh and correct. He offered to “take it back to the kitchen and make it look like the picture,” but that wasn’t the point, I didn’t want a staged plate; I just wanted the burger I thought I was ordering. I didn’t feel comfortable sending it back at that point.
What’s worse is how the service went completely downhill after that. The waiter didn’t come back for over 20 minutes. No refills, no check-in, and most importantly no singing happy birthday like he had committed to. At this point, we had to flag him down just to pay and leave.
That moment, his birthday lunch. was a big deal for our son. He’s been isolated, making progress, and trying so hard. We didn’t need a free dessert or a party. We just needed someone to follow through on their word and show some heart. Instead, a small issue with a burger somehow became enough to derail the whole experience. Had I known my questioning if I received the correct burger was going to offend the waiter and scare him away, I absolutely wouldn't have brought it up. But that shouldn't have been the choice I had to make.
If your staff can’t handle feedback without withdrawing all service, hospitality may not be the right field for them. You never know why someone’s there, what this meal might mean to them. And once the moment’s gone, you can’t get it back.
We’ve moved on, but Wahlburgers Wild missed the opportunity to make a real difference for a kid who desperately needed something positive. That hurts more than...
Read moreI thought the prices here were pretty reasonable at first, but then I was told that the burgers DO NOT come with fries! In what world does a burger with that price not come with fries? There ain’t nothing fancy about these burgers. They were good, but just kinda basic. How you gonna try and rep the government cheese but then charge the commoners $16 for a burger with no fries? Lame! The wait to be seated was horrible. Didn’t have time, so sat at the bar and didn’t get to experience the cool fish tank. Tots didn’t come in cool little fry baskets like in pictures. They came in tiny little cups, cold and barely full. Seemed to be extremely understaffed, so interactions with the employees were short and dismissive. Except for our server. She was amazing. Although she was the only server in the nearly full bar area she stayed composed and efficient. She did an amazing job in her situation. Wish I woulda remembered her name to shout her out. My receipt just says “smith” as the server. Went up to the top of the pyramid after eating here and saw the menu for the lookout restaurant. $18 for their gourmet burger and it comes with fries! Also there was hardly anyone eating there. I was deterred from eating there because they made it sound like you would most likely need a reservation and I didn’t want to bother with it. Idk what dinner is like but the place was nearly empty at lunch while it was an hour wait for food down stairs. Do yourself a favor if you are already planning on going to the top, look into eating at the lookout restaurant for lunch instead of wahlburgers. I wish...
Read morePros: food is great no complaints place is clean and food comes insanely fast. Most servers are sweet. Awesome saltwater tank in the middle of Dining area. Cons: our server was unfortunately giving my husband and I the stink eye from the moment we came in. I don’t know him so that could be just how his face is but it was a negative and awkward vibe.
I had bariatric surgery so I can’t eat much anymore, therefore I don’t generally stay as long as other customers. We asked our waiter for to go boxes because We needed to leave. After he brought them, he left and was nowhere to be found. (He was probably doing work elsewhere, no fault in that) so we walked up to another server and had her assist us, paid and we left. As we were walking out he chased us down and interrogated us on if we paid or not and who we paid. Luckily my husband still had the receipt and showed it to him. He gave us major side eye and seemed to accept that we did not in fact dine and dash. He may have had this happen before and therefore was on edge so I’m not going to pass judgment to harshly. Usually I don’t leave reviews but this played in my head on the way to our hotel, and ultimately I decided that it was not ok behavior. Especially when we were nothing but kind and respectful to him and still left a tip. I must end this with I DO NOT WANT THIS WORKER PUNISHED IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!!!! I would just like them to reflect and adjust their behavior....
