Considering that this is the repository for the history of Cape May County, it was disappointing. The museum is poorly organized. Items could be displayed much better, having descriptions of what the items are and how they were used. Running on primarily volunteer staff doesn't help. Tours are dependent on the knowledge of the volunteer conducting each tour. They told us they get no state or federal funding. If grant proposals are written and funding obtained, the museum could accomplish much more in restoring the buildings and their contents. The lighthouse light is the crown jewel of the collection and is worth seeing by itself. There's a 300 year old elm tree on the property that is also worth seeing for those interested in trees.

The Museum of Cape May County was established nearly a century ago. Since then, it has been preserving and promoting the area’s rich history. The museum is managed by the local historical society and has expanded to such a point over the years that it’s now spread over three buildings. The exhibits are changed regularly, which means there’s always something new to see and learn, no matter how many times you visit. The museum is open to casual visitors, and there are regularly scheduled guided tours given by knowledgeable locals for those who’d like to make the most of their time spent on-site.

The paranormal investigation event with NJ ROPE was pretty freaking cool. Got to learn a little history of the buildings and paired off into teams of 3-4 people to "investigate" with equipment provided. We got to explore the house (with a lot of rooms), carriage house, barn, listen to past captured evidence and even investigate the cemetery across the street. At the end of the night, we got a debriefing on evidence captured that night. Even though I am a native, this was my first time here. So the event gave me a glimpse into the the actual museum itself. It was too dark to see, but definitely had a lot of cool stuff, so I'd definitely like to come back and check the buildings out in daylight. According to the website, the house museum is only available via...

A mandatory guided tour is the only way to visit this “museum”. They’re probably thinking, how can these ignorant visitors wander around and possibly learn anything from our precious exhibitions without the guidance of our expert docents?

So even though we arrived before their advertised closing time, we were turned away because we missed the last guided tour of the day, which started two hours before closing. The lady at the front desk gave us a cold ‘What can I do for you?’ reception and told us with great conviction to come back early the next day because their guided tour is ‘absolutely worth it’. Did we...
