tl;dr: it’s freaking amazing here, and I love it!
There is so much to say about FitPOWER, but first and foremost, the people are what create the foundation of this place. FitPOWER is home to a group of kind, welcoming people, that know their stuff and are eager to share what they know with you, whatever your goals are. This is easily the most welcoming, inclusive, and body positive gym I have been to. The community that calls this gym home is an amazing group of individuals, and my life is definitely better and richer for knowing all of them. If you ever have a problem or concern, Jess listens with an open mind, and will work with you to make sure you don’t feel uncomfortable or unwelcome in this space.
My jiu jitsu has grown exponentially since beginning training here over a year ago. The coaches are knowledgeable and experienced. They understand that different people learn differently and prioritize different things, and that different bodies will move/accomplish a technique in different ways. Sometimes my short little arms or legs need to approach something a little differently, and Coach Christine is always there to give guidance and direction on how to do or adapt a move if I’m finding it particularly challenging. Coach Christine and Jess make sure you have a solid understanding and use of the foundational skills, which gives you a sturdy base to build and advance your jiu jitsu. The classes are planned thoughtfully and with a curriculum in mind, so you know your time will be well spent and you’ll get the repetition and practice you need to retain moves and information. And if your bjj needs stand up, this is the place to be! I wouldn’t be at all comfortable on my feet doing takedowns if not for training here, where stand up is incorporated into most classes and has a dedicated (and super fun) weekly class with Coach Christine. Plus, the competition classes are a great way to go a little bit harder and test your skills with people looking and prepared for the same thing.
As I’ve begun my journey into lifting, Jess has made it very accessible and fun. The introduction to barbell class is well planned and leaves you feeling more comfortable around a bar. Jess presents information in a way that helps you retain and remember it when you’re on your own. I’ve recently begun doing her Strength for Jiu Jitsu Program, which is easy to follow on the mobile app, and I already feel a difference in my body. It’s a great compliment to the Power Foundations class on Saturday mornings!
The pandemic has made classes and training look a little different, but Jess met the challenge! Jiu Jitsu has solo drills and partner drills currently, and Jess provided the gym with grappling dummies to keep us training safely. I appreciate the safety measures and Jess’s transparency on the measures her gym is taking during this unpredictable time. I can’t wait until things can get back to their regular schedules (whenever that is), but in the meantime, Jess has created an environment that allows us to keep training and growing safely, and I feel confident in her and trust her decision making...

Jess excels at giving me precise feedback on my form with relevant cues to help me improve. She also tolerates and potentially enjoys the puns I make throughout the class.
