Yummy soup and freshly-baked cookies and cake... Ultimate combination of comfort foods. I enjoy stopping here for a late lunch. I do have some criticims, though. For one, the large menu boards list everything there is; except the soups. The first time I was there, I asked which soups were available and the person taking my order pointed to a piece of paper with a small point font, taped to the bottom of the glass. Not a huge deal, but they seemed rather annoyed that I missed it. The soups can be a bit hit or miss. The mushroom soup among others seemed more like a stroganoff some days. There is also a soup that comes ice cold and it's meant to be searved that way. I ordered it by mistake once because I was in a hurry and didn't read the small print. When I realized it was cold, I brought it back in and explained that wan't expecting a cold soup and asked if it could be heated up. I was basically told that it was noted on the menu and that told it's very healthy- basically implying that it was my fault, so I should just accept it as is. Yes, I overlooked that detail on my end but seeing how much I was paying for the bowl of soup and how much I freequented the place at that time, I feel it would have been nice to actually be able to enjoy the soup. All in all, I still give it 4-stars. The cake sold by the slice is phenomenal; Some of the best I've had anywhere. The cookies are great too as long as they're freshly baked. I also enjoy the slice of bagget that comes with any soup 16 oz. or more. I have not tried their sandwhiches yet but do...
Read moreProbably won't go back. The restaurant was out of sour krout, thousand island dressing, the soup was not actually what I consider "soup". Reason being, the ingredients were all separated on the hot bar (dumplings were by themselves, the onions, carrots and celery were together in one, the chicken was almost out, in its own container, and the broth was dumped over all the ingredients). The worker put all the ingredients into the takeout container, grabbed a giant tub of pre-cooked chicken from the fridge and added to my "soup" right in front of me, straight from the fridge, not heated up or anything. Pretty sure that is not considered safe food handling, but that is why I will not go back there. Oh, and after I got back home and started eating my soup, all the dumplings were raw, literally tasted like uncooked, gooey flour. Very disappointed, was looking for delicious chicken dumpling soup, but this...
Read moreI'm not sure why this place has such low reviews given what I've seen, and it seems as though some of these reviews are not even for this location (Vliet St)?
Yes the wait was a bit long, but I arrived just after noon so that's not surprising given both the time and weather (dreary, rainy, overall perfect soup weather). The soup I ordered (a quart of Chicken Noodle and a bowl of mushroom barley) was hot and delicious, and so was the toffee cookie I got. The woman working behind the counter was very friendly. My only complaint was that she was working by herself trying to keep up with everyone coming in so I'm sure having an extra person on staff during the lunch rush would help mitigate the wait times.
Overall, great experience for my first time in. I was admittedly scared off for some time because of the reviews but I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to ordering from...
