My recent visit to Open Eye Theatre in South Minneapolis was nothing short of extraordinary, culminating in the deeply moving and utterly unique experience of "Ode to Walt Whitman." This production, a testament to the Open Eye's commitment to innovative and evocative storytelling, left an indelible mark on my heart and mind. From the moment I stepped into the intimate space of the Open Eye, there was a palpable sense of anticipation. The theater itself, with its welcoming atmosphere and dedication to presenting diverse and thought-provoking works, immediately set the stage for something special. Plus, being able to grab a beer or wine before the performance started added to the relaxed and enjoyable evening. "Ode to Walt Whitman" delivered on that promise with remarkable grace and imaginative flair.

Here's the deal with Open Eye: I love it. My kids love it. Everyone loves it. Charmingly weird, fantastically creative, community focused... all of it great. They do a big variety of performances in the space so be mindful of the intended audience (not all stuff is great for kids). We mostly do the kid centric stuff and for real things like Milly and Tillie are just legendary productions in our house. You know how often we say bah nya nah? Every time. Every. Time. In the summer Open Eye hosts shows on Driveway Tour. Perfectly summer and fun and highly recommended.

My wife and I went to see Gaelynn Lee and Kevin Kling's show at the Open Eye Theatre last week. It was a very cute, sweet, fantastic, musical journey. The theatre itself is a really nice little space. Aesthetically it is kind of magical with it's brick proscenium, and miniature puppetry stages stashed about the common space. The building feels like a relic of the Minneapolis I remember when I first moved here in the early 90s set in the shadow of the freeway.

The first time I went here was for an anniversary showing of "A Prelude to Faust", and I was blown away by the mix a puppetry and live (human) performance art! The old brick venue is charming and intimate. Made a return visit recently to see another creative performance that incorporated shadow puppetry with live performance. Even though there aren't many dining options in the immediate area, they usually have beer/wine and snacks available pre- and post-show and 'eat street' is a short drive away. If you're a fan of the performing arts, watch the calendar; you will likely find something that appeals to you eventually. Open Eye is...

I was able to see the Open Eye Puppet Show on June 17th at 5301 37th Ave So, in the middle of the blocked off street (one puppateer lives near that address). I'd guess at least 150 people or more, about 60% under 9 years old, watched it, and the audiance was really engaged in the production. They also had free popcorn, cookies, lemonade and suckers before it started and popsicles, icecream sandwiches and watermelon afterwards. They do ask for donations so we put a few $'s in the bucket, but it was well worth it. I think they said it's the 4th year they've done the show on 37th and it was a great evening. I'll try to get to the...
