Very cool place! It’s a history museum, modern art museum, gift shop, cafe, event center, and there was a plaque for the Swedish Consulate at the door. Definitely don’t feel unsatisfied with the variety. Absolutely breathtaking preserved mansion which looks more like a castle, but so cool to see the awesome old architecture and the furnishings and art throughout. I adored the old kitchen and butlers pantry, I love cooking and baking, so the old ways are always so cool to see!
Some of the hallways are a little narrow and there are lots of stairs, but they have an elevator and do a good job making it accessible for something built in a time where that wasn’t a consideration. There are helpful guides and signs throughout. There is also a LOT of natural light which is my favorite thing about it I think. Good for wintry days when you want the sun but not the cold.
The cafe is amazing - I went with a friend who didn’t grow up with the Swedish American culture like I did and this place totally sold her on the cuisine, I was impressed too. I got some super tasteful and tender braised pork belly with cabbage and sauerkraut, and a cardamom cream bun. A mix of the old and new! And there’s a lot in the gift shop, I’m sure you could find something for everyone. From handmade dala horses to a kids section, cookbooks and kitchen gear, and wool blankets and bags. I got a little enamel pin and a tiny carved dala horse.
This was a good rounded day outing with a friend. Lunch, things to see, time to socialize with each other, and a shop to putz around in. Totally recommend if you’re interested in history, architecture, modern and classic art, or just a unique and really...

The American Swedish Institute stands as a testament to the power of cultural institutions to transcend borders, bridging the gap between past and present, and fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our shared heritage.
Our tour guide was absolutely amazing and it is 1000% recommended over a self-guided walkabout around the mansion. The nuggets of knowledge they have propel your experience to another level. It's an experience that is not only educational and enriching but also profound and...
Read moreProbably our 6th or 7th year being here for their Christmas display, and the most disappointing of them all.
The rooms were all mostly bare and empty-- in the large music room for example there was only a smallish piano at the far end of the room and a little 4 foot tree.
Another disappointment was an almost total lack of old, authentic or physical displays or even diaramas as they've had before. Instead there were several room with modern photos on the walls of Finns in Northern Michigan. Additionally sad as this is Minnesota and there are many Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian enclaves here (I grew up in Esko which is probably still at least 70% Finnish). So why pick some random Michigan families for the exhibits?
Finally, the rooms weren't marked and specialized for each country as they've done before, so you had to look closely to see what country was being displayed.
All in all it seemed like a quickly thrown together display made with few resources. Just how it came across.
I will say the staff as always was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Our one loss was not going on a guided tour so we could have listened to their light hearted banter. But with 6 lively grandkids that was too hard to do.
Hopefully they will learn and produce a more thoughtful...
