When I was younger I used to haunt the bookshops around the Washington Square Park area in lower Manhattan. The stores around the 14th Street area were a haven for booklovers like me. The end of a day of book hunting would usually culminate in a visit to the Strand Bookstore. Most of those stores have since closed, and Strand remains. What was the attraction to a day of book hunting? The promise of good clean used books at exceptional prices. I would bring my treasures home packed in used shopping bags, and start reading on my way home to Brooklyn on the Canarsie Line. Well I have since moved to wonderful Morristown New Jersey, and not so easy to get to the City as it was years ago. The local bookstores sold good new books, but the excitement of the hunt for that elusive book at a price that won't break the bank is all but lost... But wait... What lurks in a neat out of the way corner in my own home town of Morristown, but a throwback to the old haunts of my youth... Namely, The Old Bookstore. Pull into the parking lot and go inside, you are greeted by rows and rows of neatly organized and categorized used books for every interest. The proprietors are helpful and extremely knowledgeable. They will also buy your used books, but call in advance to find out what they are currently looking for and buying as some books are unfortunately without value (to them). The books are reasonably priced and mostly in excellent condition. Don't leave without perusing the new additions before they reach the shelves at the end of the front counter. Great old newspapers and sheet music as well. Even stereoviews! Excellent cookbooks, local history, music, art... If you are looking for it, you can find it here. I find books that I am not looking for, and didn't know existed. These days we are also masking inside, but same fabulous place. Morristown is so lucky to have The Old Bookstore, and I would hope that it remains a fixture and treasure here for years to come. A...
Read moreThe Old Book Shop is a Morristown institution for used book lovers of all kinds! It's off the beaten path, which makes it even better! Parking is easy. Well worth the trip if you are near Morristown.
The Old Book Shop has a great selection of interesting books, carefully selected by the experienced and wise owners - who have been selling books for decades. I visit this store often for high-end used books and appreciate the selection, organization and old-bookstore feel, which is increasingly rare these days. There are not many shops like this left, so I really treasure this one.
They have everything. Books of all kinds (old, recent, rare and ancient), maps, prints, comics, graphic novels, old post cards, magazines. You name it. There is also a bargain section for thrifty book buyers which has some gems in it on occasion. It's a truly unique used-book shop.
This is where "book people" go. If you are like me - and grew up around books and had a parent that loved books and instilled that same passion to you - this is your place. I love this shop, and you will too! Must visit 5 star...
Read moreThis is the best used bookstore in the State of NJ. The prices are wonderfully low, often 10% of the original cost, and you can get incredible jems there. What makes it the special place that it is is the unmistakable love of its owners for books and their constant enriching of the stock. Someone commented that its location is weird; I'd say it is rather most amusing. The accidental symbolism of the combination of places that form the "neighborhood" is guaranteed to make you smile: It shares a parking lot with a garage, in a short cul-de-sac that contains within walking distance a club (that keeps on opening and closing as an entertainment location, on account of impossible laws against enjoying life), a jail, and a place that handles bond posting. To reach it you get on John Street from Ridgedale avenue at a point crossed by railroad tracks, by a lumber yard. If you are a true book lover, going there for the first time will be a most pleasant surprise. And you'll be...
