I have a Google Pixel 4a that had an OS update that Google acknowledged would drain my battery, which required a battery replacement. I brought the phone to uBreakiFix in Napa because they had a high rating and it was relatively close to where I live (1 hour away). Normally I would do this kind of work myself, but Google was covering the cost, so it made sense to let somebody else do the work. As far as I could tell at the time, everything was fine when I received the phone from uBreakiFix. It is of course difficult to tell once the phone is sealed up (adhesive is used to close up the phone).
I have had a known issue with my USB-C charging port. About 2 weeks after the visit I decided to replace the USB-C charging port. When I started to remove the phone from my phone case, the back cover of the phone started to pry away from the rest of the phone. This had never happened to me before. I proceeded with the repair to find that 1 screw was missing from the screen ribbon and 8 screws (all the screws) were missing from the mid-frame connecting to the back cover. The lack of those 8 screws was likely the reason for the back cover prying away from the phone.
I called uBreakiFix at 10am on Saturday 2/8/25 (two weeks after my initial visit). I explained to the person on the phone what I had observed (e.g., back cover, no screws, etc.). He apologized to me on behalf of the company, said he would talk to the manager, and he would get back to me about the availability of the screws.
About 1.5 hours pass, and I decide to call again. This time I got somebody else on the phone. She explained that the original technician I had talked to got busy and that's why nobody got back to me. So I explained to her what had happened. She said that the manager said that they ALWAYS return their devices in the state that they found it. If I wanted the screws replaced, then I would have to bring the phone in to see if they have screws that fit.
I figured it would cost about $10 in gas to get to Napa and back, which is comparable to the cost of the replacement parts. A $10 trip for potential disappointment was not what I wanted. So I ordered the parts online instead.
Is it possible that my phone never had those screws? Sure, though the fact that the back cover never came off before the repair would seem to suggest otherwise. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. If the technician saw that the screws were missing, then why didn't they tell me? I can accept that they forgot or that's just the amount of care that goes into this kind of repair at this shop. It's really difficult to say either way.
I'm a pretty handy guy, so it's unlikely that I will use this shop in the future. The only reason I came here was because the battery replacement was covered.
I'm giving them two stars because they were nice in person, and they managed to install the battery. I would have given 5 stars if they just properly rectified the situation. Even the assertion by the manager that they always return devices in the original state insinuates that I gave them a phone with parts missing. Again, that's possible, but I know from my experience that the screws were likely not replaced when the battery was replaced..
If you do bring your phone here, then inspect it before you leave. Put the phone back in your case. Take the phone back out. The phone screen is attached with adhesive, so It's impossible for you to know if there's anything missing once it is closed up. Check to see that the seals are done well (you can find tear-down guides online). Having a little knowledge about the repair, even if you don't do it yourself, will help you inspect the...
Read moreOne of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. Made five trips to the store. Was told three to five days which turned in to six. Was told my phone was ready. When my wife went to pickbit up they handed her my broken phone and said the new screen was defectice. Told me the new screen would be there in two days that friday. The second screen shaowed up about five days later. I was told the phone would be ready the following wed. Went to drop the phone off again and they tell me their samsung system was down and It’d be ready the following wed. Yet another call from them telling me they could fix it the next saterday! That would have been three weeks and two days from the time I first brought the phone in! At that point I called a competitor. They had my screen in stock and fixed the phone the next day in about an hour and a half. I went back to get a refund from ibreakifix and they said the manager wasn’t there to authorize the refund and wouldnt refund the screen charge. I called and the manager said theyd be there that saturday. Went in and the manager wasn’t there. The employee working got ahold of the manager and they finally refunded all of my money. Five trips, almost three weeks and a bunch of run around for nothing. I honestly dont know how this place stays in business. I’ll never deal with this place again. Go to Batteries+bulbs instead. They were professional...
Read moreTook my phone in a week (9 days) ago.And while fixing my inner screen, my outer screen was damaged by the staff. I have these bright pixelated lines that stay on my screen. I was contacted on a Wednesday, 5 days after the damage and told that the replacement screen was in the store. The store is 36 minutes away. The person who called on Wednesday, said he was going to check to see if a technician could come pick up my phone, fix it. And return it to me, which was great service.Instead I never got a call back. Two days later, I was called again to ask when I was bringing my phone dropping it off, which is nowhere near my location. I would need to drive to the location 36 Minutes Away. Wait two hours for it to be fixed and then drive thirty six hours home. I explains the previous phone call re the offer to pick up my phone. I was told to hold while the new caller looked at the notes. Then I was told that they don't know who would have told me that even though mobile replacement is offered sometimes. I said, can't you see it in the notes, who called ? the person on the phone said, "yes.If you want me to spend my time doing that instead of something else" i asked to speak with the manager. I haven't received...
