Battery Park is one of the best parks in Newcastle County. It's trail is about 1-2 miles long. It's nice and level ground, perfect for people who can't handle a lot of hills. Sometimes people are biking on the trail, but typically they're very polite and will let you know when they're behind you. And will announce which side they're approaching from. There's a few playgrounds for little children and a few faux beaches. On the sand you can find plenty of quartz stones and see glass. And some good drift wood if you're looking. Just a warning; The water is very polluted. So I would highly suggest/warn others DO NOT GO IN/ DRINK/ OR EAT FISH FROM THE DELAWARE!!! The park has some very friendly squrriles. Bring sunflower seeds, peanuts, walnuts, or almonds and the squrilles will take them right from your hands. I bring sunnflower seeds everytime I go. It may take a few tries. But if you're calm and toss them one they'll come over to you. They're very curious. Also the park has plenty of Canadian geese, and ducks. If you bring some bird/duck food (DONT NOT BRING BREAD, ITS AWFUL FOR THEM.) They're very happy to have the treats. Some times the Calamar Nickel docks there, and will allow you to board and tour it for a small fee. And during the Spring, Summer, and Fall they have free events going on. It's always a nice surprise when you catch one by accident. I happened to go while the local fire station was having a fire awareness event. There was free food, drinks, and ice cream. Also some live music and stage shows. It was an awesome surprise. All the pubs and restaurants are all within walking distance from the park. Most of them are excellent. Parking is ample, with many different parking lots for the park. You can almost always find a spot in the lot closest to where you want to be. But you may have to park a block away, but it's rare. But the park has multiple places to enter. Do watch out for the Pokemon go players!) Some don't watch where they're walking. But usually they're also very polite. There's also plenty of historic Old Newcastle sites and buildings right outside the park.
Park gets a 7.5/10 and 4 stars
Pros: Clean grounds and fields, plenty of parking and space, great views of the Delaware, friendly wildlife, young children playgrounds, well kept walking trail, and right off the Delaware river. Some weekends have free events with live music, food and vendors. Cons: Delaware river VERY POLLUTED (and sometimes stinks), sometimes over crowded with Pokemon go players, often mobbed with geese and goose poop, beaches wash up trash...
Read moreOne big problem will this park which is used a lot by old folk too , is lack of comprehensive bathroom facilities. They are closed during winter and only open on Memorial Day and the single Potter-potty is useless. There are no more other bathrooms facilities for the two mile walk and two mile back . You’ll walk four miles before you get back to the only bathrooms which are in the park near downtown. That’s terrible planning ! The park is located in old New Castle downtown and provides a beautiful walk along the water through some beautiful areas . The walk is about two miles each way and very scenic with container ships passing by on a daily basis . The park is used by dog walkers , cyclists and pedestrians . Some of the dog walkers don’t pick up their dog crap and today we actually saw a woman with two dogs bag her phoo from the dogs but left it on the rocks instead of putting it into the containers by beamers beach near the parking lot where there are two bins provided. Most cyclists are respectful but some are very rude and drive close to you without any warning and I can see accidents happening here. They don’t appear to have bicycle bells these days and it’s very frightening experience for some old folks . Pedestrians overall are very friendly and the park is usually very safe with fishing people near beamers beach which is part of this park . The park is very friendly with access for those who want to use wheelchairs. In fact you can do the full four miles on a wheelchair if you so wish . You are likely to see container ships and oil tankers too in the water as you walk . You can take the cycle path which goes across the main road onto a canopy of trees and end up in Wilmington if you fancy cycling...
Read moreI love the breeze off of the water. It's to bad that Delaware has allowed the chemical factories etc to drain their pollutants into the water. Sometimes, I wonder how many five eyed fish are swimming in that trashed filled water. The walking paths in Old New Castle are a nice walk except for observing every two steps garbage that has drifted into the rocks during low tide. Within my 1 mile walk alone I observed the following: Two hard hats ( I imagined all kinds of frightful events that may have happend to these men), a babydoll that had a missing eye, five bottles of shapes and sizes (it was hard to tell if any had a message inside but, I am pretty sure the gallon milk jug was empty), a football, a baseball, a storage tub (again, I had weird thoughts about this tub), several garbage bags, a Coleman cooler, and tons of shoes and shoe inserts. If they could just clean up the water this walk would...
