The park formally known as Thompkins park. Great park, even better now there's a renovated dog park, amphitheater has bands, singers and other entertainment mostly during the summer months, people can picnic, bar b que , have parties and even family reunions in the park including picnic tables. Baseball diamond for little league kids with benches. Great for relaxing on the many park benches or activities like handball courts, outdoor exercise equipment, children play sets , a great lawn for sun bathing, plenty of green grass and trees. Water fountains, run track or ride bikes, lay in the grass and read books, meet people, There are even a chess area,( bring your own piece ( am not sure if the rec center loans out pieces. Some pretty good players there, from beginners to experienced players . Huge par I would Guesstimate about 10 or 15 acres over 2 short blocks wide and one block long or 2 entire blocks including streets big. A tree grows in Brooklyn, magnolia tree from book and movie across the street, as well as Kosciusko Olympic sized public swimming pool with diving and kiddie pools across the street on the west end.. 79th Police precinct on the eastern end across the street from the park. Also across from the Precint the store on the corner of green and Thompkins make some of the best, freshest sandwiches in New York City ( Excluding the old Blimpies) with every toppings you could ever ask for and at reasonable prices, Close to the G train, the Nostrand Ave 44 and the Thompkins Ave bus , ( I believe it's number 47 ) I believe I have covered everything , about this little oasis of greenery in the middle of Bed-Stuy. The only thing missing is a lake, ( Brooklyn's Propect Park has that and more , otherwise Thompkings Park aka Herbert Von King Park has everything including outdoor movies nights ( think of, an outdoor drive in movie without the cars.) The concerts in the summer have many known famous singers and groups and best of all they...
Β Β Β Read moreThis park could be so nice but itβs constantly noisy. Feeling really grateful for the staff trying to keep it clean after a herd of careless people trash it every weekend. People grill and drop their ashes everywhere, drive their cars into the park and park them on the lawns with actual trailers. The worst part is the constant noise. Insanely loud and really terrible music starting at 3pm on weekdays. Forget about weekends. How can people play music so loud the kids in the playground are obviously going to have some earring loss from it. Sometimes there are multiple sources of deafening music within a tiny perimeter. This is absurd. I wish someone measured sound volume and enforced reasonable regulations. Your balloons are very cute during your birthdays but less so when you just leave all of your trash on the side of the park. Again, so grateful for the staff courageously managing to clean it up after each storm of BS.
First kudos to the amazing staff working hard and taking amazing care of the green spaces while users are not always helping.
This park could be amazing if basic safety rules could be enforced more systematically. Dogs are out of control running unleashed in the park as children play nearby and there is a dog park. Dog urine kills trees (two of them will need to be taken down in the dog run already) but dog owners let their dogs urinate on them everywhere. And sure most people pick up after them but who wants to lay in the grass where a dog just pooped? Be respectful. Imagine if more of these gigantic trees die. That would be a disaster for the neighborhoodβ¦
Everyone playing extremely loud music sometimes literally reaching such high volumes that it is a health hazard. This hasnβt really started this summer but makes the park really unlivable most weekends.
This park is a treasure for the neighborhood, the staff do their best. Itβs meant to be shared not to...
