What a gem of a place! The Chinese Scholar's Garden at Snug Harbor is a truly special place. As one of two authentic Chinese gardens in the U.S. built by 40 Chinese artisans from Suzhou, China this place is definitely worth a visit.
Our tour guide did a phenomenal job explaining the history and significance of the space. It was enchanting being surrounded by such beautiful architecture and greenery. The details are so wonderful, you can tell that this project was a labor of love filled with intentionality and mindfulness.
The space is very relaxing, perfect for contemplation or reading a good book. I love how it invites you to sit almost anywhere and to gaze upon various structures, my favorite being the ornamental rocks that were brought from China.
If this is your first time visiting, I highly recommend you schedule a tour. It's worth the knowledge of knowing the traditional features of a Chinese garden, as well as the story of how much work and intentionality went into developing and building it.
I purchased tickets online, and was checked in at the Visitor Center. Our tour guide met us at the center. There are no bathrooms inside of the Chinese Scholar's Garden so I recommend going to the restroom in the Snug Harbor garden area before your tour. The tour took 1 hour total, and we got to spend as much time as we wanted in the garden at...
Read moreThe New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden at Snug Harbor is an absolute hidden gem in Staten Island. Walking through the entrance feels like stepping into another world — tranquil ponds, graceful bridges, bamboo groves, and carefully designed rock formations that make you feel transported straight to a classical Chinese landscape painting.
The architecture is stunning, with beautifully detailed pavilions and winding corridors that invite you to slow down and take it all in. It’s clear how much thought and artistry went into the layout — every angle seems to reveal a new perspective.
I was lucky enough to experience the garden while it was raining, and it was one of the most peaceful moments I’ve had in the city. The soft sound of raindrops on the pavilions and water features made the garden feel even more meditative and calming. Walking through the bamboo groves, the gentle rustle of the stalks swaying in the breeze added another layer of serenity that made the whole experience unforgettable.
Whether you’re visiting for a quiet afternoon, photography, or to experience a piece of Chinese cultural heritage right here in New York, this garden is worth the trip. It’s serene, thoughtfully maintained, and offers a rare chance to experience beauty and calm in the middle of the city.
This was super affordable at just $5, it’s $4 if...
Read moreI love the garden. It’s authentic traditional Chinese garden. It reminds me of my parents’ hometown near Suzhou. We went there in an overcast day with light drizzle. Not many people in the garden. But it captured perfect ambience of a Chinese scholar in a dreamy, tranquil traditional garden.
However, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Garden should get a “F” for not only the upkeep of the Chinese Garden but also the other gardens outside. Weeds grow on the beautiful roofs. Trees and shrubs are overgrown and block the delicate views of the house and garden. Weeds are everywhere. Handcrafted wood structure and railing are falling into disrepair and should be repainted. Inside the house it is just empty space. They could put in some furnitures and have better lighting. It’s sacrilegious to ruin such beautiful garden and house. I went to the Chinese garden in Portland, OR. It is in much better shape. Please get this garden into better state so people can enjoy it.
Nevertheless, please go visit. There are only two of such authentic Chinese garden houses in the US. Look past the flaws I just mentioned. You can see and feel how a traditional Chinese literati appreciated the beautify in the world. If you have time and it’s not crowded, sit down and enjoy the beauty and tranquility around you. It will take you to a...
