Jay is always on the beach and came recommended by a friend, so I knew he’d be great to take a lesson from.
For context, I started surfing one year ago, and have taken a lesson here and there, but had a lot to improve upon, and really struggle to catch waves without somebody pushing me onto them.
The lesson started before the beach, when Jay sent over a workout and video on pop ups. It was great to have this.
Once getting to the beach, Jay provided a wetsuit and board. The lesson started on the sand, and we went over pop up and paddling technique. Jay was really specific with alignment cues. For the pre pop up position he noted legs tight together, back arched, and hands tight together and close to the ribs. We practiced several pop ups noting the big hip movement required to get into the right position. Jay also noted the importance of your gaze when on the board - cueing reminders to always look up.
Though I wanted to learn more about how to look for waves to catch, Jay noted that understanding paddle and pop up fundamentals were key to hone first.
Jay helped me catch several waves, sharing more alignment cues when standing up including bending the knees, straightening the back, arm positioning, and gazing towards the houses.
Jay also reminded me to breathe, have a good time, and not overthink it too much.
I look forward to taking another...
Read moreWas trying to pick up surfing for couple of years, tried few different places and several instructors around Far Rockaway. Found Jay by accident (my previous coach wasn’t available), called him up, did several sessions and here’s what I can tell: He’s always on time! Provides all gear you’d need: board, wet suit, boots so you don’t get cold, sunscreen, storage for your stuff. I was even able to tie my motorcycle to his van so it won’t get stolen. Sessions are reasonably priced, and I’m never rushed and i think even longer than that what I pay for… The most important part is Jay wants you to surf, he wants you catch waves, not just be in the water and take more classes. By far the best way to explain surfing technique, complimented with plenty of tips and tricks to make your life in the water easier and more enjoyable.
To sum it up I’ll be going there this summer and will recommend this spot to anybody who wants to enjoy surfing.
P.S They have rentals...
Read moreI'm not usually one to write a review so I think that says more then my words will but I feel it necessary to share for anyone looking for lessons. Firstly it was something I had wanted to do and planned to do but like a bone head I forgot to plan ahead. I gave one other place a call and they didn't even answer so I started thinking it wasn't gonna happen. I gave Jay a call and he had left for whatever reason and when I called told me I can head back if ur coming out now. So I hopped on the train. The lessons I received were above and beyond. No impatientness from Jay. Just a nice run over of the basic and we were in the water once he felt I was ready which wasn't long. Then it was lots of encouragement with small notes on what he could see that I was doing wrong. Needless to say with the great learning environment I was provided I am now hooked and will definitely go back for more lessons to improve my surfing skill. Thanks for...
