The gym is under new ownership. it seems a dark haired women of advanced age and her wannabe fake "juice head" short stature husband, bought powerhouse as another "investment/toy" (apparently he also moonlights as a DJ at a bagel place.) the attitude and actions from the owners to the front desk are extremely unprofessional. This is but a first in an array of problems that plagues this once glorious "rocky or meat head" gym.
LETS TALK ABOUT SAFETY! Most of the equipment (if not all) here has been broken for years and instead of hiring reputable gym professionals to fix the broken machines properly they hire hacks that are unprofessional, unscrupulous friends of the owners for little or no money, hence the quality of the workmanship in which the machines are patched up look terrible. I've observed staff members gorilla glue stuff back together!!! The following includes but not limited to -
CARDIO MACHINES THE BIKES - WOBBLE and tilt, THE RESISTANCE IS BROKEN! might as well sit on the couch at home if the there no resistance. )= THE TREADMILLS - The BELTS HAVE NO TREADS. NONE!!! nothing is maintained. major problems on most of the cardio equipment here.
BARBELLS EVERY SINGLE BARBELL IS BENT!! It prevents any correct or safe benching, dead lifting or squatting. Basically any exercise that you may need a perfectly straight bar to achieve the perfect rep(s). These bent bar also prevents doing any "rocky or meat head exercises" correctly.
FREE WEIGHTS LAWL! SOME WEIGHTS ARE WELDED TOGETHER like the DUMBBELLS and the leg press safety knob. SO NOT SAFE.
THE FLOORS IN THE ENTIRE GYM NEED TO CHANGED!!! The rubber mats are worn out and uneven, which prevent proper squatting and deadlifting and any other "rocky and meat head exercises"
STUFF AND BROKEN THINGS LIKE MIRRORS, LIGHTS. WILL NOT BE FIXED FOR 6-8 MONTHS AT A TIME. (if ever) one fan got broken and never got replaced.
THE MUSIC SELECTION is horrible if you ask to change it they will ignore you. staff members..... a large round nerd gentleman is most unfriendly and unwilling. unless your a hawt chick in which case he will try to give you a free protein shake.
THEY NOW accept silver sneakers so be prepped to work out with grandma. if your looking for a hawt young firm person to look at .... look elsewhere my brahs the energy in this place is at a snails pace. literally brah.
SO ALL in ALL everybody from the cardio queens to the biggest meat heads will have a problem with the equipment or rather the lack of care that is put into this gym.
The RATES used to be better and as soon as new management took over the rates shot up 50 dollars and it didn't go into the gym equipment it seems
PS .. NOOOO FREE WIFI!!! ASKED THE ROUND GUY IN FRONT HE SAID THEY DONT HAVE THE PASSWORD. BUT CLEARLY THEY DO BECAUSE ALL THEY PLAY ARE APPS ON THEIR IPHONE THE WHOLE TIME USING THE GYM WIFI .. ITS 2015 FREE WIFI IS EVERYWHERE.....WHY WOULD YOU NOT ALLOW YOUR MEMBERS TO USE...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWent here some days by myself and even with some friends. The day pass is $15. There is a lot to unfold about this gym. I've been trying to find some new gyms and came across this one.
All the pros: The staff seemed to be chill. There are some machines at this gym that most gyms don't have (Hack squat, Chest supported T bar row, etc). There were a lot of cables and machines and even free weights. There are two floors (the first floor has a lot more cables and machines and a couple of benches for free weights. The basement had some machines but more of a squat, deadlift, and bench area with a lot more free weight area than above.) It was also organized in a way. Unlike LA and some other gyms, the plates and equipment were at their own machines. They also had their own yoga or some kind of empty room which I suppose is for yoga or stretching. They also had their own cardio section and weren't exploded with cardio machines like Planet Fitness. One thing though that I love personally is how it wasn't too packed. It wasn't empty but it definitely didn't have people stacking onto each other till maybe rush hour. You didn't have to wait for others to be done with a machine. (this is just something me PERSONALLY I really liked). In general, this is all the things I liked about the gym and just positive things I can say about it.
Now for the cons: Like other reviews have stated, the equipment is very rusty and some of the paddings on the machines like preacher curls and dip machines have tears on them, even some of the benches. It was kinda dirty and didn't feel good to put your hands on them, especially the plates. The locker room was also pretty tiny and felt cramped. Also, not sure if this is every day at this gym but I stayed till rush hour and like I said before, it doesn't get packed but the machines are a little too close to each other so it can be a challenge for some people trying to lift and not disrupt one's session. Don't think it was the people since it wasn't crowded but I think it is the placement of the machines and benches. The biggest letdown for me was the price. The price is $60 a month. This could just be me, but from other reviews, the price was an issue for people. Don't get me wrong, the gym is really good. Me and my friends talked about how good the gym was and the equipment was solid. Sure, it was rusty and dirty but we had a good time. I think it's just a bit pricey for how it is you know, the old benches and bars and how it feels dirty. $30-$40 seems like a reasonable price for this gym. Even $45 is an okay price. $60 is an overkill but again, that could just be me.
Overall, from the days I have gone, I liked it and really did enjoy my time there. I would've taken photos but I forgot. I hope this review helps anyone else trying out gyms and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreGreat gym that has everything you need to get fit, gain muscle mass, lose weight, or maintain your health. Just a heads up: If you are the Equinox type, then this may not be the gym for you.
Personally, I love the basic essentials of this gym. For example, you have (5) flat barbell bench press stations, (3) incline barbell bench press stations, and (1) decline barbell bench press station to choose from. If you are squatting, you have (4) squat racks [(2) in the basement and (2) upstairs] along with (2) Smith machines to choose from.
For cardio, they have an abundance of treadmills, stair climbers, elipticals, and stationary bikes; all excellently maintained.
The only con is that the men's bathroom is a mess at times.
No other gym in Flushing, Bayside, and Whitestone compares to the convenience and price.
Lastly, I would recommend the morning time slot. The gym is less crowded and has a more mature group that is laid back. Unfortunately, my schedule does not allow it.
As with any other gym, you will still have to occasionally deal with the following people:
The person that sits at a machine/equipment texting or surfing the internet as you wait for it to be freed up. Occasionally, you will see the same person sitting in the locker room glued to his phone as others change.
The narcissist that is constantly recording or taking photos of themselves, so they can impress on their social media.
The 3-5 guys that literally are glued at the hip. Even in the locker room, all members will awkwardly remain in the room until the very last group member gets dressed.
The annoying teens that spot each other with weight that they have no business lifting. When your spotter is lifting the weight from the first rep onward, you have no business lifting that weight.
The amateur dead-lifters that destroy the barbells. Even worse, the females that belong to this group have no idea that they are adding more inches to their waistline with this exercise.
Once again, if you are looking to get fit, gain muscle mass, lose weight, or maintain your health, then I recommend Powerhouse...
