I stayed at this facility for close to six months (2024), and I was completely surprised by the poor oversight in operations. But once the report came out Oct 17, 2024 by The City of New York Department of Investigation JOCELYN E. STRAUBER COMMISSIONER highlighting 51 nonprofit human service providers that operate many of the homeless shelters in New York City and of the City’s oversight of the shelter system detailing widespread corruption, nepotism and poor oversight I had become completely aware as to what's taking place.
For starters the workers are poorly trained in regards to professionalism and employing a high level of customer service. There was a Latino gentleman who worked in operations who was very sly, sneaky and one who on the down low would try to instigate issues between residents. Most of the security did their job, but there's some who have street mentalities, and un-trust worthy characters. They will allow residents on to floors they know they don't live on, as if they're not aware this poses security risks.
There's no real oversight at all throughout the facility beginning with intake on. Individuals with mental and physical disabilities and who are on SSI aren't supposed to be housed at this facility. There's also supposed to be a no drug policy strictly enforced. The case managers, operation staff and security see, and know who's who but they act like they're clueless because to them it's a job, and for the facility it's about making money so they don't care who they house. But for those who there to take on necessary life repositioning having people who shouldn't be at the facility are obstacles to progress.
During the stay I had three roommates, and all three of them were drug addicts. All three of their case workers were aware of their issues which extended beyond drug use, such as forms of mental disabilities.
I've been poor, just getting by, middle class and upper middle class. For most of my life I've been very ignorant about the social service systems and their operations. I think it's like this for most tax payers. But after experiencing and seeing first hand what takes place from day one of entering the system, then being placed within a shelter operated by one of the non profit agencies I can see clearly that for most of these agencies it's a pure money grab.
I read The City of New York Department of Investigation JOCELYN E. STRAUBER COMMISSIONER whole report which was 101 pages. My experience at this shelter is just one aspect to why I have decided to run for NYS House of Representatives in 2028. New York City (5 boroughs and Long Island) have become a Gotham City. New York City Homeless Shelters is one area of NYC agencies which not just needs to be cleaned up, but has to be cleaned up to be a viable instrument to providing the services NYC citizens need to help get their lives on track. Skyway Men's Shelter is operated by Acacia Network Housing.
They get a one star review because I have no love for organizations which are supposed to exist to provide assistance and help, but clearly are vehicles to be a cash cow.

Read moreBeen here eighteen months (!) and while the facilities themselves are okay (there's free laundry, for example), the Operations staff are mostly some combination of bored, incompetent, and even malicious (in a petty way, to be sure, but it adds up over time) bottom-feeder types...there are a few good ones, naturally, but they quickly move on, of course, sometimes in just a month or two! To give you an idea of the incompetence and sheer lack of fiduciary concern, or any moral conscience, I was eventually transferred -- as a reprisal of sorts, after lodging an official complaint to the city about being physically attacked in front of staff and video camera and literally nothing being done about it at all -- to another facility run by the same organization contracted by the city to run these shelters..AND THEY GAVE THE WRONG ADDRESS to me...FIVE TIMES, even in writing!! Moreover, they also sent me to two other places that I wasn't supposed to be at!! Basically, this place is run by black and hispanic Donald Trump types of people...think of a Democrat Party Don King, Omarosa Manigault, and Ben Carson being in charge: lying constitutes their first, second, and third instincts...no, seriously, these folks are generally scoundrels, especially the R.A./Operations staff...real milking of public funds like what James Sharpe in Newark or Marion Barry in D.C. did for decades -- poverty pimps of the Poverty Industrial Complex: NYC shells out $2,200 A MONTH FOR EACH single childless adult in the shelters but we sure ain't getting nowhere near such levels of care!! To sum up: The staff here brings to mind Francis Bacon's old observation about a little knowledge being a dangerous thing -- don't know enough to actually solve anything, but knows just enough to create bigger problems; jury's still out on whether it's benign neglect or something more...
