Hammond Pond Reservation is a protected woodland park in Newton, Massachusetts. It features Hammond Pond, fishing and hiking trails as well as formations of sandstone conglomerate and Roxbury puddingstone which are popular for rock climbing.
The reservation is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston. Its first parcel was acquired from John Lowell in 1916. Trails connect it to the adjacent Webster Woods and Houghton Garden. The MBTA Green Line (Riverside Branch) cuts through the connected park system from East to West, while Hammond Pond Parkway splits it from North to South.

And of course lots of people come to practice their rock climbing at one of the few locations to climb near Boston. But there are some drawbacks here as well: The trails seem tired and worn with all the use they get. The area has lost some of it's lush and green and verdant appearance over the years. Read moreHammond Pond Reservation is a fantastic spot for walking and is very dog-friendly. Conveniently located right across from Chestnut Hill Mall, it’s my go-to place whenever I drop my wife off for shopping. My husky, Max, loves it here, and it’s perfect for off-leash walks.
The trails are well-planned, clearly marked, and offer a peaceful environment. There are even areas where you can practice some light mountain climbing. Both the people and the dogs we meet are always friendly.
