My husband and I just completed the Huakaʻi Nui ~ The Big Hiking Adventure with our guides, Ryan and Luanna, last week and had an incredible time. I can't speak highly enough for how informative Ryan and Luanna were on what to expect with this long hike (6+ hrs), talked us through more technical parts of the hike, and shared so much knowledge about the land we were on and Hawaiin culture. Their passion and respect for the island really shone through and we were grateful for all they shared. There was only one other couple with us (so 6 people in total on the hike) which I was told is pretty typical for the off season. During peak it gets up to about 10 people on average. The freshwater pool that was at the end of the trail was divine and we loved how it was not accessible to people outside of the tour group (the entire trail is on private, protected land).
The only feedback I would give is about how the hike is described on the website versus what the trail was like during this time of year. Ryan and Luanna provided much more details on what to expect than what is specified on the website and the details they shared, I think, would benefit from being included on the website so hikers can plan accordingly. The website describes "10 stream crossings" which there are but with this trail being an out-and-back, that is actually 20 crossings. All of the crossings were really flowing given that this is the rainy season right now and for nearly all of them, we crossed streams of knee to waist-height water with really slippery algae-covered rocks. While it wasn't necessary dangerous and Ryan made sure we all felt comfortable and informed before crossing every stream, I don't feel like the hike listing gave the most accurate description for what to expect. We learned that in the summer, the streams are much lower and hikers can cross nearly all the streams without even their boots getting wet. But that definitely is not the case for the rainy season and I think the website should reflect that. The guides had on "aqua-type" hiking shoes that water can flow through but for my group not realizing the extend of the stream crossings, the traditional hiking boots we brought were sloshing around with water in them for 5 hours.
Overall, we had an incredible time on this hike and highly recommend it for groups looking to see a different part of the island that not many others get to experience. Ryan and Luanna...
Read moreWe did the "PUA PUAʻA ~ “THE PIGLET” ATV ADVENTURE" this past Saturday, and the entire experience from start to finish was amazing. We got there a little before 9am (the location was easy to find because they sent a detailed text message the day before with good instructions). It was an easy process to check-in and learn the basics of the ATVs. They keep the group sizes small (there were just 4 people total on our tour, between 2 ATVs), so the tour is intimate and never felt chaotic or busy. The trail was the perfect mix of heart-pounding adventure and also quiet moments to take in the scenery. Keoki, our tour guide, was absolutely fantastic. He shared so much interesting history, information + lots of laughs. I loved that he took the time and effort to get to know us, so it felt like more than just another tour. We also much appreciated that he took so many fun photos and videos of us and shared them once we got back. He called us ohana during the tour, and it really felt like that. We loved chatting with him so much that we ended up hanging out in the parking lot afterwards just talking. If you're thinking about doing this tour (or I'm sure any other tour with North Shore EcoTours), do it - you...
Read moreI was a attendee with my family during in which the youtuber Baylen was there. Our guide Keoki, was a good guide for the most part. During the end I overheard and witnessed Keoki go nuts infront of Baylen's camera about racism and all. I do not know who Baylen is, but my son showed me the video when it was released. Other reviews you state in your copy and paste that explained most of it was not on camera, but I think that is infact not true. Baylen and his friend where awesome on the tour and comical. Keoki had to ruin it at the end and lash out making a incident infront of all of us, INCLUDING my kids which was absolutely terrible to be talking about racism right by them at young ages. I witnessed Baylen in the entire incident and there was never anything wrong about what he did other then hold up a middle finger at a camera I believe based on his video my kids showed me and from what I witnessed. I would rate the tour part of it a nice 4 stars but I am rating it overall 2 since of the incident at the end that was so uncalled for by Keoki. I will make sure nobody I know will step foot in this tour place until Keoki is no longer apart of it or learns from his...
