I will start by saying that we were unable to find any fire extinguishers! Doorknob at main entrance was rusty and overhead light was rusty, had peeling paint and full of bugs. Vines were growing up the house and shrubs were overgrown and leaves were all over the outside walkways. Outside furniture was old and rickety and not a comfortable area to hang out and relax. Outside kitchen doorframe is rotting and makes door difficult to use. Broken pots and concrete with a rusty pole sticking out out back as well as an old broken chair and old microwave just laying outback on ground. Ripped open bags of sand by the AC unit outback. Rust around outdoor windows on garage and other places. -Outdoor driveway light had missing glass panes and broken glass laying on the ground. Outdoor shower had no privacy wall. Dead roach on floor near back doors in living room. -Outdoor lights on bedroom doors were broken. One light fixture was missing with EXPOSED WIRES and the other one had a broken bulb. -Outside ground lights were broken with parts and glass just laying on the ground. Old rusty Outdoor speakers Inside couches weren't clean and VERY uncomfortable and old! One was covered and one wasn't! The covered couch had stains all over it. Ceiling fans were dusty and dirty. -AC returns had the CHEAPEST filters that aren't conducive to filtering out dusts properly especially during Covid! Dining room wall had dirty handprints by switchplate for lights. Dirty kitchen overhead lights with bugs in all four lights. Refrigerator had tons of rust all over the outside of it. Kitchen cabinets had water damage. Soap dispensers were low or non existant. Window in guest bedroom was rusty on top left corner. Carpet in guest bedroom wasn't installed correctly and made a trip hazard. Missing light in guest bathroom as well as rusty light fixtures in bathrooms! Nasty hair on doorframe in guest bathroom.

-Master bedroom was absolutely the worst!!! FECAL MATTER on the baseboards near toilet and nasty plunger in the shower bathroom. -Master shower had a tremendous amount of mold. Shower head was moldy. -Master shower bathroom had missing heat lightbulbs and had an exposed fan that is unsafe. -The pocket door in Master shower bathroom couldn't close properly. -Light fixtures were rusty in ALL bathrooms. Missing batteries and battery cover on Master bedroom remote control. TV was too large for the cabinet it was in and that made it impossible to slide doors out of the way so TV could be used properly. The TV was also too low and was difficult to watch. Needs to be wall mounted!! Return vent in the Master bedroom wasn't closed properly and could have fallen on someone's head. Master closet was full of pictures and mirrors and had no hangers! Carpet in Master bedroom wasn't installed properly and is a trip hazard! -Vent covers in the ceiling were rusty! one old vent cover was left on the floor in Master bedroom. Toilet seat in Master shower room was old and dirty. Bathroom exhaust vents were old and had bugs in them. -Switchplate in Master bathroom with tub was broken. Sink in Master bathroom with tub had no stopper to fill sink with water, also risking losing valuables, which made it stressful. -Master tub shower had a light hanging that had a rusty cracked cover on the ceiling that could've fallen and hurt someone. Master bedroom can lights were burnt out. -Master bathroom tub had a broken hot water handle that fell off and made it impossible to use hot water!!! -Master bathroom tub had no spray attachment on the body sprayer. -Comforter that was on the Master bed was dirty with some type of bodily fluids on the . Also, our stay was for 4 days, with 6 adults. We were left with 1 roll of toilet paper, 1 roll of paper towels, 1 trash bag, and 1 dish washer tab. For 4 days. With 6 adults. We have NEVER been left with so few basic necessities with a vacation rental.

We recently book a stay through Better Beach Rentals at 1 Beautiful View checking in August 25th and were to check out August 31st. This was our first time to Oak Island. We have rented many, many homes up and down the east coast over the years and have never seen a property that was permitted to be rented in this condition. Upon arrival at the location we were prepared that it was an older home as my husband saw the pictures on the website. It did not look like the pictures except for the view. My husband and I were greeted by a cockroach on the kitchen counter as we entered the front door. There were ants crawling on the counter and in the cabinets and on the stove and a substance that was stuck to the counter which I tried to clean and was not able to do so. The floors were covered in hair and not just dog hair. Below were the issues that my husband reported on the first day and sent to management office.

All the screens are torn open The Gate on the back deck was laying on the floor of the deck not attached Spindles on the deck were missing making it a safety hazard for small children or pets As you can see in the picture from one of the bathrooms it obviously had not been cleaned. There were clumps of hair on the floor The entire deck is rotted and is loose feeling very unstable Handles missing on the dresser, hence the drawers can not be opened. Door to the deck is rusted and won't close fully The were ants in the kitchen cabinets which my wife cleaned out.

The management did address the safety issues on the deck and they were very responsive with all of the issues we reported. A man came and repaired the screens, and the railings but we didn't have him attach the gate as it would need a lot of work to replace so we just used ours. The pest control company called to come and clean the ants, but I had already done so. The cleaning company called and offered to come and clean up the bathrooms but I had already done so. Someone came and replace light bulbs. (???) not sure why.

This house should not be rented. It is truly in need of renovations and did not feel safe. The paneling on the walls had obvious water damage and the floors in inside showers would bend when you stood on them. Water damage on floors by the bedroom doors and in kitchen as well. The cabinets were really gross and I tried to clean but paper was stuck to the inside so I didn't put anything in them. We just kept our stuff in a box on the counter.

While Better Beach rentals did offer to come and address the main issues we put forth there were too many issues that needed to be addressed. They seriously need days or weeks to try and get this place in shape. So we just packed up and came home on August 29th. We sent email letting them know were were leaving but didn't hear anything back until I called today to tell them we had sent an email looking for departure instructions.

My reason for being so upset is that how was this house cleared to be rented in the first place? Who checked it? If they did they would have seen the trash behind the dresser and the mounds of hair next to the toilet and the beds. You don't pay hard earned money to go on vacation to have to call and have maintenance, cleaning people and pest control to come the day you arrive. These issues should have been addressed before any tenant every stepped foot in this place or any vacation property for that matter. This is not how you do business in the vacation rental industry. This was to be my 60th birthday vacation and I literally could not sleep another night here as no matter house much I tried to clean it, it would take the entire week.

Yes, we could have had the cleaning company come in but honestly there really wasn't much they could do as this house had serious neglect. Maybe they have other properties that were better and for $2,800 oceanfront we weren't expecting perfection. Just a clean, safe, healthy place to enjoy my 60th...

I am writing this as a WARNING for others that may choose to go through Better Beach Rentals for any booking. I’ll also add this is my first time writing a bad review, but felt it necessary due to the gravity of the situation. My fiancé at the time, now husband, and I toured a home listed by Better Beach Rentals. After the tour, we decided to use this location to have our WEDDING. The day of the INITIAL tour we went back to the Office and told the Better Beach Rentals employee we planned on having our WEDDING at the location. She congratulated us and we briefly spoke about capacity limits and rules and then we then paid the deposit to hold the property for the days we needed. Once it was time to make the official reservation, I paid the first payment without issue. I was advised there would be one final payment due before the reservation. Once the time came for final payment, I called the office to authorize this. When I called I was advised there was an “event fee” in the amount of $1,500.00 also due in addition to the final payment. We were NEVER told there was any type of event fee even though Better Beach Rentals were told on DAY ONE, we were planning on having an event there. I was passed on to a Manager because the first employee I spoke with lacked any sort of patience to help me sort through this confusion. Once I was passed to the Manager, she too lacked any sort of apologetic nature for the negligence of her office to convey there was a STEEP event fee also due. My fiancé, now husband, and I were left with no choice but to pay the outrageous fee or CANCEL OUR WEDDING we had been planning for over a year. Better Beach Rentals claimed it was in our contract that we signed, I checked the contract and there is one line that states there COULD be an event fee. It asks that you disclose there will be an event at the time of reservation which we have done. Having a HIDDEN event fee in the small print of a large contract, with no specific amount, is a POOR business practice. Better Beach Rentals lacks transparency and leaves customers with no choice but to pay EXTENSIVE FEES or cancel very important life events. Let me add that this surprise $1,500 event fee did not add anything to the reservation, we were not provided with anything extra from Better Beach Rentals. We even had to supply each bathroom with hand soap and toilet paper, as it is not provided by Better Beach Rentals. We also had to supply all cleaning supplies as there is none provided even with the extensive fee. The event charge is simply an administrative fee they charge because they can. This issue could have even been resolved with an apologetic and understanding nature from the employees of Better Beach Rentals, I understand they are a business and businesses exist to make money. However, the due to the complete lack of any professionalism and transparency, we will never be returning customers of Better Beach Rentals and warn others about choosing to book properties through their company.
