MJ Automotive Repair and Electric — Attraction in Oakland

DEFINITELY go to MJ Automotive, this was the BEST experience I've ever had at an auto shop!! I called them because I had a running light out on my Fiat, and most of the shops near me said they wouldn't work on Italian cars. The person who answered the phone was kind, knowledgeable, and double-checked to make sure they had the parts in stock before letting me know that I could drop the car off that day.

When I went to drop the car off during my lunch hour, I was greeted by Juan, who was kind and fast in his assessment of what was wrong. I expected to drop my car off and pick it up in a few hours, but Juan actually started working on my vehicle right then and there, and had the light replaced within 10 minutes!

He also completed a check of my vehicle and found some other bulbs that were out, which I hadn't noticed. I was SUPER embarrassed that my car needed extra work but Juan was cheery throughout and just grabbed the other bulbs my car needed. All in all, Juan replaced six bulbs in under 20 minutes. I am astounded by his level of service. I was able to get back to the office before my lunch hour was over, with time to spare.

As my Fiat gets older, I've had to go into a number of shops to have issues addressed. This shop gave me by FAR the best experience I've had. I couldn't believe how fast and kind they were. Additionally, their lot was clean and well-maintained and I noticed a wide variety of cars there for maintenance. They're clearly very knowledgeable about their work.

I wholeheartedly recommend you go here, ESPECIALLY if you don't know much about cars or if you're someone who usually gets taken advantage of by your mechanic. These guys will help you out. An honest and responsive shop. I have taken my car here three times, and for two of them I was charged NOTHING even though they took meaningful time to assess whether there was a problem. Once was for a tire pressure warning, and the other was for a squeaking noise coming out of my car as it rolled out in the morning. They easily could've told me there was a problem and charged me for something superfluous, or they could've at least charged me for the time spent investigating (which I offered). Instead they told me they couldn't find anything and to just come back if things got worse.

The other time I came in was for some routine oil change, tire alignment/rotation, and other typical maintenance. I was quoted an absolutely fair price (far below the dealer quote) and they took a look at the belt that the dealer said I should replace and said that it should be good for a while longer.

These guys just want to fix your car and send you on your way. They aren't here to nickel and dime you or overcharge you for unnecessary work. 100% would recommend to anyone to come here. My only concern is that if they become too popular it may take longer for me to get my own car...

I have to post one last review before I move across the country. I drove into Juan and Mario’s lot four years ago and have been driving in for tune ups, oil changes, smog checks, bip repair, and advice ever since. The times I didn’t have a car, I would walk or bike by just to say hello.

The crew here embodies excellent service not only to the vehicles, but also to the people behind the wheel. Lately, there seems to be fewer and fewer businesses in town that offer anything beyond the cold, transactional nature of so-called professionalism. At MJ Automotive, I’ve always felt like a human being and community member interacting with other human beings and community members. I have met sweet people in the lot who are also always greeted with the same good-natured warmth I am met with.

I am sad to go and will come back to visit again. In preparation to leave, I handed off my car to my friend with the only stipulation being that they take the car to MJ Auto, forever til it ends.
