Went to The Start on Grand for the first time, made a reservation a couple of hours ahead of time which was great. Hit there a little early and we were quickly seated. The wait staff is very attentive, our orders were in, we got our drinks (craft made sodas...no soda on tap) and about 10 minutes later our food arrived. We ordered the roasted cauliflower and it was spectacular-not overcooked, crunchy, lightly seasoned and trading very fresh. Next came the Classic deep dish pizza-rich flavors, sauce was just enough to let the toppings shine, and the crust was Lou Malnati-like, if you know what I mean. We also had the Pesto Chicken Thin Crust-loved the fact that the pizza wasn't swimming in pesto, it was spiraled on top of the chicken, enough to enjoy but not overwhelming especially with a thin crispy crust. We don't live in the area, have relatives in Oakland but if return trips to The Star are a part of the journey I'm definitely down. Thanks, Star!

We checked out this gem thanks to Oakland Restaurant Week! Personal pan pizza + salad for just $10. At a 10-inch diameter, this is the largest personal pan pizza I've gotten before. We ordered the chicken pesto and Hawaiian pizzas, both thin crust, and roasted cauliflower to share. It would have been more than enough food without the app but glad we got the cauliflower! The Hawaiian pizza is a monthly special for January 2020. It includes FRESH pineapple (this really makes a difference!), pepperoni, and olives. I'm not someone who likes pineapple in their pizza, but I gotta say this one is the best one I've had. Probably because the pepperoni was so good. Discovering places like this one is why I LOVE Restaurant Weeks! Pros: great thin-crust pizza, good Happy Hour menu, good service, great value Cons: parking is rough (~5 spots are available next to the building but fill up fast), notably poor cell signal in the area (I have T-Mobile)

First time trying deep dish pizza for hubby and I and we really liked it. Have had the star on grand on my map for quite sometime and glad I finally got to it this weekend. Place is spacious with ton of seating a long high bar - kudos! Friendly and prompt service, great prices and clean bathrooms (gender neutral available) makes me happy! Oh, and they also have gluten free options! We came with our 2 month old in a stroller and they seated us right away. We shared a small classic deep dish pizza (they also have regular thin crust pizza) and a hazy Fieldwork IPA. Deep dish was lovely. Totally different from a regular thin crust pizza. We weren't super hungry so the waiter's recommendation was on spot - we finished the small pizza and were filling full but light! Prices are really great at $22 for a small and $29 for a large. Would definitely be back!

If you love this style of deep dish, then you'll enjoy this pizza. However, I wouldn't rank it as high as I would my other two local favorites, Patxi's and Zachary's. Deep dish is good so they have that going for them, but they won't be an option for me next time that craving hits unless I just happen to be in the area and I'm craving either pizza or a drink at a bar (their bar looks awesome).

I was pretty unimpressed and/or unhappy with the service I received on my visit and I think my girlfriend was way too generous with the tip. We sat down and ordered drinks and appetizers for the table with our waitress and then she asks, in what sounded like a judgmental tone, "are you going to order more food?" I mean, I did come to a pizza restaurant, right? I think we'd like to order a pizza.

Round of drinks came, along with the wings and meatballs we ordered as an appetizer. Decided to also add on a salad at this point (which came quickly). However, after this, I think we waited for about 30 minutes before the waitress finally came back to take our pizza order. Our appetizers were done and we were just babysitting our drinks and waiting. She didn't seem like a new waitress either (you can usually tell), so I don't know what the problem was.

When we finally got our pizza, it wasn't bad. Like I said, it's deep dish. If that's your style, you're going to like it. I just would have rather had Zachary's or Patxi's. Our pizza didn't have the pepperoni that we asked for, which was a bummer for an already less than satisfactory experience. Also, I'd avoid getting your pizza topped with ricotta cheese. It looks really cool, but that flavor just does not match the way the rest of the pizza tastes. Also, the crust was okay.

In summary, decent enough spot to go to if you're in the area and want deep dish or a drink. The bar for customer service is set low enough so there's more room to impress in the future than to disappoint, though a low bar could just as easily be lowered. If you don't mind traveling further, if necessary, I'd recommend that you go to one of the many Patxi's or...

Today (1/17/2024) Me, my Mom, and My girlfriend decided to dine in at Stars and was left disappointed and dissatisfied due to the passive aggressive racism. My server with the dark hair and glasses made it seem as if we (POC) did not exist.. she went a minute without checking on us but the ladies seated behind us received so many laughs and giggles(i’ll leave you to guess what color they were). The food is amazing and we spend a lot of money at this location to be treated as if we don’t exist Lol. I don’t know what type of business you’ll are running, but please be caution with how you treat people. Exactly why we did not leave her a tip! If I place a Pick-Up order and decide to dine-in instead, then that’s what you’ll do! I am paying for this meal and without me or other customers putting money into this establishment, you’ll would be SOL! Treat all customers with respect.

  • Below I will leave the reviews from my Mom and Girlfriend. **

Moms review: The service we received was horrible, the waitress and manager acted as if we weren’t there after being asked a question. After being ignored for at least 45 minutes, we were able to get the waitress attention and she stated ‘I thought your order was placed! Clearly that was a lie when others came in after us and received their food.

My girlfriend: I could barely finish a sentence without being interrupted with the male manager who is EXTREMELY PASSIVE in his position. He even walked away mid conversation and had the nerve to say “thank you ladies” when we were still talking about how we wanted to...

FOOD: Burrata plate on crostini was delicious. Deep dish pizza was lacking height and ingredients, bordering on skimpy. The dough was too crunchy and cornmealy. It was the height of a normal pizza, and for the price of their small 9" pizza you can do way better at Zachary's.

SERVICE: Service was ok. Checked in on the food, delivered drinks, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Atmosphere: They seated us in the back by the kitchen door when there were other tables available towards the front of thr restaurant. It would have been nice to look out the window while we ate, but no biggie. Our table was set with plates and cloth rolled cutlery. The plates had small bits of stuck on food, obviously rushed through by the dishwasher. The napkins felt very stiff and rough, like they were brand new out of the box and hadnt been washed. The thing that really put me off was the dishwasher who came out and sat at the bar to watch the NBA playoff game. Not very professional to have working staff just hanging out distracting the servers. Also there were beer flies hovering around our table, a tell-tale sign of dirty floor drains which made me really question the sanitation of...
