I’m 14 and from Brooklyn, I dont have many audubon societies in NYC so I was very excited to visit this one. It was amazing! Not only was I shocked to see the visitor center looking like a museum with all its taxidermy but I also had a great experience with the volunteers. A man named Dan heard me talking about my love for taxidermy and took it upon himself to introduce himself to me. He was very kind and after a while of talking he showed me another room with even more specimens. He taught me many things, like how taxidermists taxidermy birds (I had thought they attached each feather 1 by 1 but they actually gut the bird, keep the skin and sometimes a couple bones, and then drape the skin over the base.) He showed me the leg bones in the brown pelican and helped me identify feathers. The whale vertebrae’s were so amazing! Overall I had an amazing time and I saw a red shouldered hawk which was so cool. I hope you can find someone to fix the big broken ammonite, I wish I could help. I look forward to visiting this...
Read moreIt's a nice little place I found passing by looking for a place to "discover", may be a trail or a beach, but what i found was much more than that; what lacks in space is make up by actually taking the time to talk to the guy who was there that day, very friendly and knowledgeable, he told me about the display they have and how just recently they change it, having beautiful birds of pray and 2 huge pelicans (one who's local to the area, and the other that's not), I asked if they had any programs for children and he mentioned that scouts do have every once in a while some activities, then he asked me if I was familiar with the botanic gardens in Encinitas and after seeing some pictures, I definitely wants to go see it. So whether u r new to the area, or a local, stop by to this place and found new things to do, go...
Read moreWonderful visit! We arrived just on opening so our Audubon rep, Rocco, spent over an hour with us going over many of the hands-on exhibits. Their collection of stuffed birds and fowl were amazing! Rocco was humorous and such a font of knowledge! Did you know the city of Carlsbad has an ancient plug dome volcano (Cerro de la Calavera) that last erupted 22 million years ago? We didn't! Our time there was both educational, informative and entertaining and would be of interest to young and old alike. Be sure to take the trail along the lagoon to see many plants with QR codes to learn more about them....
