Now that I have time to sit down, I can explain what made my first experience with... Floating, as I'll call it, and my first professional massage a memorable one, and one that will be difficult to match in the future.
As a summery, it was an enthralling experience from start to finish. The staff were kind and attentive, the facilities were spotless and sterile from what my scrupulous eyes could tell, and my first time floating and getting a massage I feel will be hard to match.
But, in a more long-winded and detailed fashion...
I should note now, this was a birthday gift for my 22nd. When I first arrived, I was taken aback and worried about my casual and "comfortable" demeanor, meaning some rather baggy clothes and a torn-up hoody. This is Classen Curve after all, and as I drove me rather beat-up car into an upscale area, in front of a large-windowed establishment, I was worried that I'd be looked upon skeptically...
But not a single staff member seemed displeased to see me. I was welcomed with warmth, and when I told them it would be my first time floating and getting a massage, and air of curiosity cropped up about them. Not intrusive nor cautious, but genuine intrigue on what I would take away from this experience- I'd dare to say, they wanted to make it my best experience possible.
Tea and water are freely available, and the seating, while rather low, was comfortable. The staff were attentive, made sure I was content, and I waited for my turn with the masseuse.
When you receive a massage, you are asked to strip down to your "comfort" level. You lay on your stomach, so woman will find their fronts unexposed, whilst your hindquarters are constantly covered by a blanket. You will not be bare before a stranger, and they will be sure to continuously ask if you are comfortable. They don't want to hurt you or make you uncomfortable, and I was neither one or the other through my hour-long massage.
The float itself was... Subject to person. You have the option of having music and lights within the tub, but I felt like I wished to be alone with my thoughts in the darkness, no sound. You properly shower before stripping completely and entering the tub: I myself am a tall and heavy man, and worried I would not float, not fit. But I found myself comfortable in the dimensions of the tub, some five feet across and eighty feet long, a foot-and-a-half deep. That doesn't sound like much water, but the solution itself is a special blend of therapeutic minerals and other items that makes someone EXTREMELY buoyant. The water is warmed to typical internal temperature, and the door closes. The lights outside turn off, and you can be left in complete silent darkness if you wish.
For forty minutes, I simply "meditated" if you want to call it that. I relaxed, more than I ever have before, and enjoyed myself. Now, as per that "subject to person" bit... If you experience anxiety, paranoia, or claustrophobia, floating may not be fore you. Typically, I'm not an anxious person, but no more than an hour after my scheduled end of my spa trip, I had to be somewhere. I worried near the end of my session if I would have time, if I would be able to get ready for the rest of my birthday- then that turned to more anxious thoughts I won't ramble about. Simply put- anxiety ruins the experience, so do try to come relaxed.
In all, it was a wonderful experience, and I enjoyed my time there. If I ever find the time and money to do this again, I certainly will- both the massage...
