I have been training at 10th Planet Orange for over a year now. I am also a Chapman student and I cannot speak more about how this art has changed my life. You will gain the confidence to handle any physical confrontation and finally attain the physique you have been chasing. Truly the best No-Gi room in orange county in terms of technique taught, overall vibes, and quality of training partners.
Mike John and Jon Cho teach directly from Danaher curriculum that they study daily so we are being taught the most up to date No-GI moves. Mike John teaches 11am and 7:30pm and is also an active competitor in EBI and ADCC, his perspective shows what will currently be seeing in the competition scene. Jon Cho teaches 6pm and his class is the perfect environment for someone completely new to mixed martial arts. His level of detail and teaching techniques are easily understandable for a newcomer and have yielded tremendous results. In my time at 10p Orange I have seen people of all ages stick with it and make it a consistent part of their schedule and within a year they are completely different people both off the mats and on.
I started my Jiu Jitsu journey at the world renowned Caio Terra's Academy in San Jose. When I moved to Orange for Chapman I had to find a new gym. This was honestly very hard as my standard was that of 10x world champion Caio Terra. I tried gyms from AOJ to Checkmat searching for where would take me to the next level. AOJ has a beautiful gym with arguably some of the best black belts in the history of bjj as the instructors. However after a week of training I felt as if the techniques taught at 10th Planet would actually translate to the real world and Comp scene better.. Mike John truly has the best curriculum I have seen with sequential flow emphasized over single moves(I think he copies Danaher to the T). My goal is to be a world champion and one could argue why not go to AOJ where they have many of those. My choice was so easy to make after a week at AOJ. The level of training, enjoyment of class, and overall experience was just better at 10th planet orange.
I think finding the best gym for you comes down to your goals in the sport and where will you have the best time and want to come back. Most gyms out there are strict traditional Brazilian gyms where half of what you learn you can never apply to a real scenario and the curriculum has not changed in years. 10th Planet Orange has the people to make even the most casual student have a blast and truly have fun instead of over complicating it. At the end of the day we all want to learn how to fight and protect ourself sand family. All I can recommend is come in try a class and learn in a great friendly environment, we all started somewhere and even the smallest amount of training can be the difference in a real...
Read moreI've been attending 10th planet for over 2 years. I've even switched to other gyms only to return back to this place. The people here are friendly and the coaches are stellar. The coaches are black belts and they all have their own style. So far, I study mainly under Jon Cho and Miko Gamecock, there is also Michael John which I have not had the chance to study thoroughly with yet. Although 10th planet is a modern style of BJJ, this particular location has a very interesting blend of modern and the traditional Gracie-style martial arts as well as wrestling, judo, and combat-jiu-jitsu.
Despite the chill attitude of the coaches, they have a high standard for the curriculum. Technique is taught and practiced thoroughly every day. Sparring sessions everyday are required to test your knowledge of Jiu Jitsu. They make it very clear, you will not be promoted unless you meet their rigorous standards by demonstrating that you can apply it in a live situation.
That being said, if you stick to it, they will help you and you will learn BJJ. I can speak from experience being somebody who is un-athletic for most of my life and not a fast learner. All the coaches are patient and willing to teach you their gems if you put in the time. All the coaches want you to succeed.
Unlike other gyms I've come across, the vibe here is very friendly and welcoming. You can find partners who are aggressively exchanging techniques, to partners who are slow methodical. All the practitioners here will show you how to escape a submission if you get tapped out.
I've never come close to being seriously injured training here. There was an incident recently with impact to my teeth (this is very rare). This was largely my fault as I should've worn a mouth guard. That being said, this is a combative sport so always be aware of what's happening and tap or even stop if you have to.
Unlike other gyms I've been to, there is no sense of hierarchy here. From the coaches all the way down to the training partners, everybody here seems to have a great time enjoying Jiu Jitsu.
I originally joined Jiu Jitsu to overcome and improve my mental state, and I definitely...
Read moreI have been coming here 8 months.
I was never athletic in my life prior to this.
This has truly been the greatest choice I have ever made in life. The humble, welcoming, and supportive atmosphere cannot be overstated. Once people see that you are willing to consistently show up and hungry to learn, they will guide you.
If you have no martial arts or athletic background, be aware, you WILL be made to feel uncomfortable. This is BJJ. Your body will go through changes and learn endurance. You will figure out that it is possible to breathe and not gas out when you have a 215 lb white belt on top of you. Submissions are no joke, that's why we tap to them, so as not to get a knee blown out, or an arm broken, or choked to sleep. But that is what BJJ is all about...putting yourself under extreme levels of pressure and stress so that anything else life throw's at you is nothing but eazy peezy. You will walk out every time you show up just a fraction of an inch stronger both mentally and physically than when you walked in the door.
Shout out to Coach Mike John! Thank you for being my guide and mentor through this process. So infinitely glad and grateful we reconnected after so many years.
Do yourself a favor in life and come show up at 10th Planet Orange and become a...
