UPDATE: SSI reached out after my original review to offer apologies and a nail redo, which was very generous. They did a great job with turning my experience around, and made it easy to schedule. They made sure I was taken care of and I appreciate the great customer service I was shown. I tried the signature facial, which was AWESOME and relaxing! Emily did quality work, communicated throughout the process and made sure to ask about any concerns I had- thank you! VERY happy I gave it another go because today’s pampering was wonderful, and hopefully my first experience was an exception.
Really wanted to love this place, but super unhappy with my experience and the subpar quality of my manicure. My sister had a GREAT experience with her mani/pedi, everything was impressively clean and the girl who did her nails was super attentive to detail and professional- so I went for one myself a month later. My nail technician was kind and friendly, said that nails were her jam, she was graduating from here in about a month, and French tips would not be a problem. I thought I scored! However, as you can see from the pic the quality is seriously lacking. Cuticle care was skipped entirely! That refresh is one of the major things I look forward to on the rare occasion I get a manicure, so I brought it up and asked her to fix it for me even though we were at the end of the service. She looked my hands over (they were soft from the mask she used) and said they didn’t need it, it looked fine. I don’t know anything about the process of nails (only what a normal end result looks like based on previous manicures), so I trusted the girl that was graduating from this prestigious highly rated school. Nope, the cuticles are not fine even with massive amounts of moisturizer!! Showed it to my girlfriends the next day and they were horrified I paid money for it, even if it was discounted. Blurry wavy French tips, and dried crusty cuticles yuck. I refuse to redo it soon bc I have to pay extra to remove all the gel. Not only was there zero supervision like how they falsely advertise, there was zero accountability or rectification. Tried contacting them about coming in to have it fixed or at least to let them know of the quality control issues but all their emails and phone numbers were either dead addresses, went straight to a cutoff beep or had a message about the school being closed. Finally got a response from the website form used for signing up as a potential student, saying someone would get back to me but no one has. My manicure was Nov 24th. Super unprofessional and...
Read moreI had an appointment at 9 am and arrived early, at 8:50 am. As I approached the front door, I saw a well-dressed woman carrying items in her hands, and I opened the door for her. She thanked me and walked right past me, heading to the back of the building. I assumed she worked there or was affiliated.
Ten minutes passed with no one greeting me or acknowledging that I was there. I sat in the waiting area. Eventually, the same woman returned and said she’d get someone. A new customer came in and waited at the front desk. About ten more minutes later, someone came up to help the new customer, completely ignoring that I had been there for nearly 20 minutes.
When I finally walked up to the front desk to check in, they couldn’t find my appointment in the system. We discovered it had been scheduled at another location. The front desk girl offered to check if a student could take me here instead, and I agreed because I’d already been waiting. I called the other location myself to let them know of the mixup so I didn’t keep them waiting. At this point, it was 9:20 am.
A student came to get me and asked if I’d had lashes before. I said no. She then asked if I’d at least had a tint or lift. Again, I said no. She didn’t explain anything about the process or ask me what style I might like. I spoke up myself and said I’d like a hybrid style, but she said she couldn’t do that but would try to give me longer lashes.
When she finished, I looked in the mirror and immediately noticed that a few lashes had already fallen off. The lashes looked very light and minimal—barely noticeable. She told me she was done. I had to ask about aftercare myself, and she only said not to use anything hot and to wash my face gently. Then she handed me the same brush she’d used on me and said, “You can take this if you want,” and directed me to pay.
I paid over $70 with tip for lashes that look terrible, no explanation of aftercare, no choices or consultation about the style, and overall poor customer service. No one even offered to book a future appointment, or even seemed interested in having me back. I left feeling embarrassed and disappointed. My friend even asked me if I’d gotten my lashes done at all because they were so minimal.
I understand this is a school, but basic customer service—like greeting clients, explaining the process, asking about preferences, and ensuring satisfaction—was completely missing. I would not recommend this...
Read moreTo be honest... I had a bad experience at the Skin Science Institute while getting a gel manicure and pedicure.
First, the seating was very uncomfortable, my back hurt from the stiff bench and I'm only 33 so it was strange to get back pain (no padded back, no arm rests, and no recline just a very upright straight position).
It was also very uncomfortable abd sometimes painful when putting my feet out for her, on the edge of the tub. They should have padding or extra towels for you to put your feet. It really hurt.
The other big problem was how long it took! They told me before I came it would be 3 hours!? I was shocked and thought they must have been mistaken with a different service like massage or facial. How could a manicure and pedicure take3 hours?! Sure enough when I went in they said it would take this long. I thought, ok well this will probably be the best one I've ever gotten with some extra long relaxing massage.... or... it would be like when you get your hair cut at pail Mitchell and the instructors must come and check at each stage of the haircut. It turns out there was a nice massage, but most the time came from the girl just very slowly doing each step. Reminded me off Zootopia when the sloth is talking so slow. I was in shock that she could go so slow. And the slowness didn't increase the quality, it was a good manicure a couple bumps and ok pedicure (she didn't do good at callus removing on my heals, they were very rough still).
I would never get a manicure or pedicure there again. I'd rather just paint my nails for free and do a good job.
I'd rate my experience a 1 star, but the girl was nice abd the staff abd other students were kind so ill give it a 2 star rating. Maybe they do their other services better, but a no...
