On 1/4/2014 I was on the hunt for an engagement ring around Overland Park. I had a few places on my list to visit and see what they had to offer. Unfortunately, one of the locations was not where I anticipated it to be. Luckily, I ended up in the parking lot of Toner Jewelry.
I walk in and start browsing rings and checking prices. I had done my fair share of research and knew what I was looking for. After a minute or so, Ashley started helping me. I was curious to see diamonds of different quality (4 C's) just so I could compare them personally instead of reading a description online. She pulled some loose diamonds out for me to see and determine what I liked. I gave her my budget and we discussed what characteristics in a diamond would I be willing to sacrifice on to meet my budget.
After a few minutes, she mentioned estate jewelry (used jewelry). She mentioned a few times how there is no shame in it, and me being a poor college student, I had no shame at all! Most of the rings she showed me, that were of the style I was looking for, were very beautiful rings. One of them captured my eye. A solitaire, .60c, SI2, G, 14k gold ring at $2300. But, they were having a sale on that ring for 40% off! I asked her about their services and how sizing, re-coating, and insurance works, and she gave me all the details.
Now, I wasn't about to buy a ring from the first store I had gone to! So, I left the store and promised to be back if I couldn't find that ring. Turns out, it was a deal that couldn't be matched. I found myself right back in there at the end of the day! I got that same ring for a little bit cheaper than the sale price, being that I was paying cash and I couldn't go as high as the sale price was. We worked it out and I am very excited to give this to my lovely girlfriend. I'm sure she will love it!
Thank you Ashley and Toner for...
Read moreI visited this jewelry store to get an appraisal on some gold, hoping to possibly purchase new items as well. Unfortunately, what should have been a simple and professional experience turned into something deeply uncomfortable and disappointing.
From the start, no one greeted me or made me feel acknowledged as a customer. My jewelry was taken without explanation, and when I asked — calmly and respectfully — how they arrived at their quoted price, the interaction quickly became defensive and dismissive. Several employees began talking over one another instead of offering a clear, professional response.
What stood out most was how the manager chose to handle the situation. Rather than addressing my question, they made an unnecessary and inappropriate remark implying I could “sell it on the street.” This comment, along with the overall tone and body language, made it clear there was a lack of cultural sensitivity and an underlying bias in how I was being treated. I was not argumentative or confrontational in any way — I was simply asking for an explanation — yet I was made to feel like I was in the wrong for even speaking up.
This experience was a clear example of poor communication, lack of professionalism, and implicit bias at work. I left feeling unwelcome and disrespected in an environment that should value fairness and respect for every customer, regardless of background.
I sincerely hope management takes this as a reminder to train their staff on cultural awareness, proper communication, and customer respect, because no one should leave a store feeling profiled for simply...
Read moreMy fiancee and I had looked around a couple of jewelry stores trying to figure out what kind of band I wanted that would go well with her engagement ring. We stumbled upon Toner Jewelers since it was very close to where my fiancee works and wanted to just see what they offered. We were expecting to make it a quick visit since they were going to close in about 30 min, but to our surprise, Paizley and Hannah were both extremely welcoming and more than willing to take the time to show us their selection without trying to rush us out the door. They were also very respectful of our price point and didn't try to do a hard sell. Instead, they listened, and offered different metals that were very appealing and within a price we could work with. They both offered us beverages which we declined. I even joking asked for tequila shots, and they said they could make that happen! We still declined, but might consider that on our next visit. They even cleaned my fiancees engagement ring for free. I know other places offer to custom design a ring, but these ladies brought out their IPAD so that we could build a ring to my liking to see if I liked certain combinations. We learned a lot about the metals, the finishes, and styles. It was extremely helpful that they provide that visual tool. It made me feel more comfortable and confident in choosing a ring. After playing around with a couple of combinations, it was easy to decide what I wanted, and one that my fiancee liked too ;-) Paizley and Hannah made this experience fun and easy and stress free. I highly recommend Toner Jewelers!...
