TLDR Men's Perm Haircut (4.5/5) I've gone to this place on and off. I have also went to several other salons in the area and other towns. My family is extremely hard is please and are usually judgmental. My aunt loved how the sides and back were done saying it was skillfully cut! I went to Rachael off of Google reviews and I can say I was not disappointed at ALL. Immediately addressed my concerns with my face and hair type and provided a picture example. Albeit, the hair didn't turn out exactly like the picture but it's meant to grow out as, in my opinion, most men's haircuts tend to be. She also provided exact products to use for my hair type! I usually hop around but I believe I found my hairstylist for a long time. Rachael is definitely a great choice to start if you are new and open to different styles!! (Will update tomorrow with pictures Before/ After and 1 week later) Reason for Points Off (Not on the hairstylist but from my experience with the business and other stylists) : The deduction is mainly because there can be a language barrier with some of the hairstylists. Any sort of language barrier can affect the hairstyle and makes it harder for both hairstylist and customer. In the case that happens, always provide a picture for reference or ask the hairstylist and examine the example they are going off of. Better safe than sorry! Haircut (5/5): I received a Men's Haircut and a Korean Perm on top of it. The price is fairly reasonable and on the lower side compared to other salons. The technique from Rachael is fantastic. The sides and the back are cut incredibly neat to the point my aunt, who is hard to satisfy, said it was very good! The perm was clean, and from my experience tends to be extra curly when you get it at Kim sun young. Preference can change but that varies from style of the hairstylist and what you ask for. Length was cut on the shorter end but still long enough for bangs. Idea is that it will grow more fuller as time goes on. Moreover, Rachael provided insight on products, styling tips, and informative dialogue on hair typing. She provided hair styling tips for when my main concern was with my round face. She provided a picture and reason why it would work! Rachael is a 5/5 hairstylist in my book for men's haircut + perm! Ask her for a recommendation or provide a picture. Service(3.5/5): Walking in is a bit tense for a new customer. I can tell when a regular comes that it's a lot more relaxed. Overall, mannerisms are standard. Some employees have a language barrier but they are courteous. They put your bag away and help you put on the coat but from my experience it definitely pales in comparison to other salons in terms of directness, attention to detail, and communication. When doing a long perm they do provide a drink, but other places often provide a variety of snacks to keep you busy. Service wasn't bad but it isn't spectacular. Everyone is nice at the end of the day and no one was rude! Atmosphere (4/5) : It's rather normal. The space is on the smaller side. The perm machines range from very archaic to modern. Most of them are older, but hairdryers, scissors, combs, and other products were good! The hair washing stations were clean. Floors were not bad and it's a really cute shop to be honest. You can tell it's been around for quite some time but that adds to the quaint value of it. Overall, I can say that it was a good experience and I'll be updating this review for further evaluations. As I mentioned earlier, going into this salon is best when you are open and well-prepared. If there is no language barrier my assumption is that it is an easy (5/5) but taking into consideration not even can speak Korean it is a (4/5). With Rachael I bump the store to (4.5/5) I will be back!

COME HERE. AFFORDABLE. AMAZING HAIR CUT AND COLOR. Book an appointment here, it’s incredible! If you need your hair colored or cut Rachel is your girl! I dyed my hair for the first time with Rachel and she and the rest of the staff did an AMAZING job. It was everything I wanted and more, I really could not be happier. I came with some reference pictures and they immediately listened to what I wanted and took it to the next level. I wanted something not too light (because I wanted to be a little bit more subtle) and something to warm up my face. Rachel knows what looks good and will listen. Also, she will elevate your look to make you feel and look incredible. She explained everything to me and made me feel so comfortable and excited. She was an angel and made suggestions on stuff I turned out loving. She threw in a treatment and cut my hair to perfection. She asked if I wanted to curl it to show off the color. And throughout the whole time, she was so kind by offering tea and amazing service. I forgot to pay for the parking fee before I came in and she offered to go and pay for it without hesitation (which I didn’t let her of course). But the best part are the affordability. I went to a salon closer to me and they wanted $550 for something Rachel did plus a hair cut for $195. The hair coloring was $150 because I didn’t get bleached. If you have been wanting to check this place out, do it! You won’t regret it, I’d drive any distance for this salon!

I really loved my first experience at Kim Sun Young hair salon! I searched Google for a salon that I knew would know how to work with Asian hair especially since I wanted to get ash brown highlights and a haircut. To say that I’m impressed is an understatement! My hair stylist was Rachel but all the employees efficiently work as a team so you’ll always be tended to. They explained to me what they were doing in the process and also how to care for my hair afterwards. They were also so generous in washing and treating my hair with different products to help with the damage bleach does to hair. I am definitely coming back! Coming from California, I’m really happy to find a salon I can trust in NJ! (Edited for grammatical errors)

Responding after reading their response. I want everyone to know that shifting the blame onto the customer is unprofessional.

As soon as I left the salon, I went straight to my graduation event. Within less than two hours, one side of my hair had noticeably straightened while the other side maintained its tight curls. If the issue were truly caused by the weather, both sides of my hair should have been affected equally. This inconsistency leads me to believe that the outcome was not due to the rain or humidity. I am educated enough to know how weather can impact curly or styled hair and I took extra precautions on this important day to avoid getting my hair wet. To imply otherwise feels dismissive and disrespectful.

I find it unprofessional and offensive to be told that the weather is entirely to blame without acknowledging the possibility of other factors. If you are genuinely sorry for the bad experience I had, I would appreciate a sincere apology without shifting the responsibility.

Dr. Song I’ve visited this salon three or four times before for blow dry and curls and have always had great experiences, which is why I felt confident booking an appointment for such an important occasion. Unfortunately, my visit today at 10:00 AM with Jenny was very disappointing.

I scheduled this session a month in advance specifically for my graduation. I arrived early at 9:48, but Jenny was still working with another client and appeared visibly overwhelmed. She asked if I’d be okay with someone else doing my hair, which I agreed to. However, after some back-and-forth about whether my hair needed washing, I was sent back to Jenny, and the appointment felt rushed from there.

I asked for thick waves, and while Jenny styled my hair, one side was noticeably looser than the other. I didn’t have time to return to the salon to have it fixed, so I tried to reinforce it with hairspray and went to my event. Unfortunately, by the time I arrived, one side had already fallen flat. I ended up with uneven hair in all of my graduation photos, which was upsetting given how much the day meant to me.

When I called to share my concerns, the manager suggested the curls may have fallen due to rain. I want to clarify that I had an umbrella the entire time and the event was fully indoors, so that wasn't the issue.

While I do appreciate the offer of a complimentary session, graduation photos are a once-in-a-lifetime moment and can’t be redone. I’m sharing this feedback in the hopes it helps improve communication and quality of service for...

After receiving a hair clinic, root perm, front perm, and a trim cut from Lindsey today—and having had services from her three times already—I feel confident enough to share my experience. I have thin, weak, and severely damaged hair, which requires consistent care. Below, I’ll outline my experience in detail.

Professionalism Lindsey had an ability to understand exactly what I wanted while also identifying and addressing the specific needs of my hair. I tend to be picky and detail-oriented, valuing even the smallest differences, and she adapted to my preferences to achieve the hairstyle I wanted.

Hair Clinic I’ve received three times of hair clinic treatments from Lindsey so far, and each time, I’ve noticed a significant improvement. She doesn’t hold back when it comes to providing my hair with the necessary nutrients, and the results are tangible—my hair feels thicker, more vibrant, and noticeably healthier.

Root Perm She is skilled at performing root perms. She knows how to minimize damage to the hair while ensuring there are no visible perm marks as it grows out. This is particularly noteworthy because, in my experience, root perms often leave visible perm marks and cause the hair to become frizzy and damaged as it grows.

Haircut When it comes to haircuts, She addressed my weaknesses and enhanced the hairstyle, making it easier to maintain. This time, I had a trim with her, and last time, she cut my hair.

Products The salon uses good-quality products, and I’ve been using the shampoo and treatment they recommended (I won’t mention the product names here). These products help keep my hair healthy without causing oiliness, maintain volume, and make styling easier.

Atmosphere Everyone at the Kim Sung Young Hair Salon, including the owner, hair designers, and staff is friendly. They work collaboratively to ensure every client feels cared for, often sharing tips for better hair care. Their attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction are apparent throughout the visit.

I plan to continue getting my hair done by Lindsey and Kim Sung Young Hair Salon. I hope this review helps others with similar concerns, and I want to note that this reflects my honest,...
