Old Shanghai Soup Dumplings has become a staple in my dining routine, with visits every Friday or at least twice a month. The consistent return visits are a testament to the exceptional quality of the food.
My usual order consists of two servings of Pork Soup Dumplings, Beef Chow Fun, and Chicken Fried Rice. The portions are generous, easily satisfying two people. The food is always served hot and fresh, typically within a few minutes of ordering. The timing of the service is excellent, with the dumplings arriving first, followed by the Beef Chow Fun, and then the Chicken Fried Rice.
The Pork Soup Dumplings are a highlight—delicately crafted with a flavorful, piping-hot broth inside. The Beef Chow Fun is savory and well-balanced, and the Chicken Fried Rice is a comforting, hearty dish that never disappoints.
What truly enhances the dining experience at Old Shanghai Soup Dumplings is the attentive service. The waitstaff are diligent about keeping water and tea refilled, and they consistently check to ensure everything is satisfactory with the order. Another noteworthy aspect is the relaxed atmosphere. Unlike some places where you might feel rushed to finish and leave, here, you can take your time and enjoy your meal without any pressure. This seemingly small detail significantly adds to the overall dining experience.
The total cost per visit typically comes to around $70 plus tax, which is quite reasonable considering the quality and portion sizes of the food. The combination of delicious food, efficient service, and a relaxed environment makes Old Shanghai Soup Dumplings a standout choice for a satisfying meal.
In summary, Old Shanghai Soup Dumplings offers excellent food, attentive service, and a comfortable dining atmosphere. Whether you're a regular like me or a first-time visitor, you're sure to enjoy the experience and...
Read moreThe namesake soup dumplings are absolutely worth it here. In fact, the workers here are so confident you'll order them that they'll set down the small dipping plates with your menu and glass of water.
I'm nowhere near an expert when it comes to soup dumplings, but I know what I love about these - thin but expertly wrapped dumpling skins that manage to contain lots of hot, sippable soup and a tasty meat filling. They come six to an order and come to your table in hot, steamy bamboo baskets. On each table, there are pour bottles of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil to make your version of a perfect dipping sauce.
I'm also a major fan of the string beans here. They're flash fried in hot wok oil to a perfect tenderness with just a tad of fermented funk. These are far and away my favorite way to enjoy string beans, and Old Shanghai doesn't disappoint.
There were a few but major pitfalls with our dinner. One was ordering the beef with peppers as one of our main entrees. We were enticed by the pictures (both on the menu and on the front window when we came in). But in a major catfishing swap out, we were given a platter that was mainly shredded peppers with a little beef. The peppers were also so spicy that we were shoveling mouthfuls of rice with every morsel.
That led to the second snag with our meal. We were given a little bowl of rice with that entree, and after chowing quickly through it, we unthinkingly asked for another. At the end of our meal, we nearly choked to find that they'd charged a whopping $2.50 for the tiny serving. Ya'll, I know food costs are rising, but that hurt a little.
Those quibbles aside, I'm still dreaming about those soup dumplings and when I can have them again. Service is somewhat cold but frighteningly fast...
Read moreOrdered scallions pancakes a they were paper thin. They were equivalent to a saltine cracker for comparison. I have had my share of scallion pancakes growing up in a Cantonese chinese family and my grandparents used to make these as well as from other Cantonese Chinese restaurants we ate at. The scallions were brown not green already a sign that these may be precooked or just not fresh. Ordered the soup dumplings mostly just thin dough and the meat portion is smaller compared other offerings at dumpling den or soup dumpling plus or joe's shanghai in nyc or flushing the portion seems lacking for similar prices. Really disappointed by the scallion pancakes more than soup dumplings, 5 dollars and change for old and brown scallion pancakes like a cracker, I feel robbed, I would be ashamed to serve these scallion pancakes to any customer, please care about the food you put out. thanks for taking my money. negative 5 star scallion pancakes and 4 star soup dumplings for taste and 3 star for value. If the scallion pancakes weren't so bad I would given a 4 star on google for taste of soup dumplings. I just don't know why you would serve scallion pancakes with brown scallions, texture like a cracker and think that is ok. probably premade as I mentioned before, maybe even deep fried in fryer...
