my family and i have always considered macy’s a reliable quality place to shop. as a union carpenter, we could usually afford the higher prices paid for merchandise purchased at macy’s.
macys will be rebuilding the corporate headquarters in manhattan, and would like to build with non union labor, paying well below area standard wages. 15,000 families in ny alone will miss an opportunity to continue to patronize macy’s, and will instead seek alternative outlets. probably less expensive alternatives. 10,000 nj carpenter families will also look elsewhere when choosing to spend their hard earned dollars.
while we always knew the cost of items were higher at macy’s, we knew we were buying quality. the same is true of union labor. we have been around for over a century, and have helped shape the greatest city in the world. we are more expensive than non union labor, but the quality of our work, the professionalism of our members, (many of whom are 2nd and 3rd generation union members) is second to none. has anyone noticed the rash of accidents on nyc construction sites...follow the story and one will quickly find the vast majority of accidents are on non union job sites. union members complete extensive training that enables us to return home to our families and communities safely each night. to coach neighborhood ball teams, or volunteer in scouting.
we would like the privilege of building macy’s new corporate headquarters in manhattan. yes, we are more expensive, but when shopping for a quality suit, or piece of jewelry, would you go to the dollar store, or would you go to macy’s? would you prefer to drive a cadillac, or a yugo....the yugo is,after all, a less expensive alternative.
thanks for taking the time to read this through to the end. it means a great deal to a lot of hardworking men and women who happen to make a living as union...
Read moreI'm only giving one star over an encounter I just had with an employee of the eyeglasses section, not the store. My girlfriend and I walked into the glasses section because she wanted to try on a specific style she really liked. Excited, she asked for some help to which we approached Kim. When we went up to her, she was on the phone "with her husband". We stood there as she got off the phone. (I would assume she shouldn't have been on the phone while at work) Anyways, when she got up to help us, my girlfriend asked for a specific style she liked to replace her existing pair. She got up and suggested a pair but when my girlfriend said that she wanted a different style, Kim said "you're killing me with this." We ignored that comment and she gave us a different option. When my girlfriend said she wanted a silver tone rather than gold tone because she already had a gold tone pair, Kim said "because of your hair and dark skin silver looks too bright." Meanwhile, my girlfriend looked visibly uncomfortable with the comment about her skin. Although, understanding that metal tones can compliment certain skin completions, the tone in Kim's voice was very condescending and derogatory. That's not all, finally my girlfriend took a step back to check the options on the other side, to which I joined her. Kim had the audacity to say in such a bored and uninviting tone "those are too sporty and not the cat eye she's looking for. She won't like them" Writing these things without her tone takes away the demeaning and belittling feeling we felt when said such things and facial expressions included. We are very unhappy with the experience with this employee and hope something can be done. I hope no one else experiences this, given the diverse population we see on a daily basis...
