The worst experience that I have ever had with any company. If you ever encounter this company or they offer you one of their "discounts"...run. I have had a home built that was less stressful than dealing with this closet install company.
A salesperson will tell you how great and wonderful it will look and how great the deal is. In reality, it is an overpriced, poor, quality job. For what they charge for a custom closet, you expect a high-quality install using high quality material. Instead, you get press wood that is chipped and damaged with installers who don’t take pride in their work and an install team and managers who cut corners and don’t care about the customer.
It took CBD three install attempts over a period of 3 weeks to correct the poor-quality work, installation problems and damage that left our closet unusable. Not only did they damage the pieces by chipping, scratching and gouging chunks out of pieces they installed, but they also improperly installed some of them. Putting pieces in crooked, not nailing trim pieces on properly or in some cases not installing the side wall pieces into studs to where they literally fall out if you put any weight on them.
They damaged my walls with long 6 inches scratches and poor patch jobs from all the holes they put in when they installed the pieces. They dropped the new closet pieces multiple times (damaging them) and scratched my bathroom cabinets. They also damaged my ceiling and door trim by hitting it with the pieces they were installing.
When I provided photos of the damages and a detailed list of the issue to CBD, the install team didn't care and acted like it was an inconvenience. They initially refused to correct the problems or wanted to use a marker and wax to cover over all the defects that they created. It makes me wonder if their 7-year warranty is worth the paper it is written on.
On 2nd visit to repair the issues, the installers brought no material at all and spent over 12 hours arguing with their managers on the phone. Managers were screaming at the install people on the phone in my driveway, threatening them, telling them to take shortcuts to fix the issues and lie to us. One manager was confrontational arguing about what needed to be replaced, when in reality it was the installer who put together a written list that he felt he needed. One installer was just trying to do the right thing but was so fearful he was going to get fired by fixing the issues properly. A massive dismantling of the original install occurred, creating an even bigger mess. CBD lied saying they were installing new pieces when they tried to install the used damaged pieces again, which they got caught doing. It ended up being a total circus.
I had a closet that I could not use for over three weeks because it was a closet floor full of broken, disassembled press wood pieces.
The problems were so severe (approximately 60 pieces chipped, damaged or installed improperly), that it took 3 installers over 15 hours on the 3rd visit to fix all of the issues with the closet installation. During that visit, more damage to my walls/ceiling.
Attached are a few photos to show some examples of the damages during the initial install.
You would think where there were multiple problems that I would hear from an upper-level manager or owner of the company with an apology and a partial refund. Or maybe an owner/upper manager would be concerned about how all this went down, especially when their install team treats their field installers or their employees lie to customers. Or an owner would be concerned about how it reflects on his company with the type of display I witnessed from his employees/managers.
Instead, the total opposite as they have not reached out to talk with me and make it right. I have received no compensation for all of the damages caused to my walls, my bath cabinet, my door trim and door.
Once they have your money, they don’t care how you or the installers are treated or the quality of the job...
Read moreNia is amazing! I met with her for my consultation, and she helped me think through my ideas and come up with a plan to build my dream closet at an affordable price. She goes above and beyond, measuring, sketching out designs and figuring out what is cost effective and practical. When I had an idea to add to the original design, she met with me again and came up with different solution until we determined the right fit for me. I can’t wait until my install date.
Update: I originally rated 5 stars for the consultation which was great. After the consultation, things went downhill. The installation was rough and the workmanship was shoddy. There were holes in the wall where racks were removed that were not filled, a bracket pulling away from the wall, the siding of part of the closet was left bulging and pulling away, the top of the shelves had exposed wood that was rough and could snagged or scratch anything placed there and a rod was rusty. Also, a space that was measured by the consultant for me to store suitcases wasn't measured correctly, so I wasn't able to store what I wanted in that space and was left with a big useless space until I contacted the consultant and we figured out we could repurpose the space with shelves.
The day of the install I received a call from the company to ask how it went, and I expressed my dissatisfaction with not being able to use a space for what I intended and the guy said the measurements were correct and I signed off on it. It is unfair to expect the customer to have to measure the space ourselves or question the consultant's measurements. If I wanted to measure the space myself and can't trust they train their consultants to take correct measurements, then why am I paying them and not buying a closet online and installing it myself?
Getting Closets by Design to fix the poor workmanship and install new shelves was a headache, with my having to email and call numerous times. They didn't take accountability and were acting like they are doing me a favor. I didn't appreciate having to spend more money for shelves I didn't originally need, but had to get because the space they designed was nonfunctional. They discounted the shelves because I was a repeat customer (l wouldn't have bought anything from them again if the design measurements were correct initially).
They eventually sent out someone to install the new shelves and repair the existing issues. This guy named Jose Gomez was amazing. I rate his service as 5 stars. He took his time repairing everything, explained what he did and was friendly, but hardworking. I wish he had done my initial install.
I've included pictures of the initial install and what was fixed.
It's a shame that my experience post the initial consultation was rough because I had a few friends that are interested in closet systems that I would have recommended use...
Read moreThis was, without question, the worst experience I've ever had dealing with any company — and that says a lot, because I've unfortunately dealt with bad ones before. From start to finish, Closets by Design was unprofessional, dishonest, and incredibly difficult to work with.
I came in with very clear ideas and expectations for my design. Instead of honoring that, they kept trying to force me into cheaper designs that served their convenience and profit, not what I actually wanted for my home. Every time I thought we had settled on a design and price, they changed it — repeatedly — forcing me to "adjust" what I wanted just to meet their constant, shifting demands for more money. It made no sense, and it was completely unfair.
Talking to them was a nightmare. No matter what the issue was, it always seemed like they wanted more money for less work. I even tried to move funds between projects when my circumstances changed (which should have been simple and fair), but they refused to work with me. It felt like they were intentionally rigid and greedy.
The design itself was terrible. It was not thought-out, not tailored to the size of my space, and didn’t make efficient use of what little room I had — which was the entire point of hiring a "custom" closet company in the first place. It looked like a cookie-cutter setup thrown together with zero real planning.
The contract is a trap. If your life changes — you lose your home, have insurance claims, or any unexpected event occurs — you're stuck. There's no flexibility, no understanding, and no willingness to work with you. It's designed to benefit them, not the customer.
The only positive experience I had was with the installers they contracted to actually put in the shelving. They were professional, polite, and a true pleasure to work with — a sharp contrast to the company that sent them. Unfortunately, great installers can't make up for bad designs and a shady company.
What’s even worse is that I referred higher-end clientele to them — people they would have never had access to otherwise — and I was still treated horribly when I needed help. Their loyalty is only to their bottom line, not their customers.
Final word: Beware. If you're considering Closets by Design, run the other way. You're better off buying shelves from a home improvement store and hiring a local contractor to install them. Save your money, save your sanity. This company does not care about you, your situation, or the quality of their work. They only care about getting paid — and trapping you into it, no matter...
