Greensleeves is a welcome gem for aspiring green thumbs like me in the north Austin area. It was hard to lose Green 'n Growing last year, and I was relieved (and a tiny bit resistant to change) at the news of Greensleeves opening in Green 'n Growing's old spot. After my first visit today, I'm happy to share that Greensleeves has a humble charm of its own.
First green flag: I was greeted with multiple butterflies when entering Greensleeves grounds. The five-star review could end here, but there's more.
I wanted just liquid seaweed and soil, but no gardener goes in and out of a plant nursery without admiring all the plants. And without buying a couple. I picked up a red shiso and a showy milkweed.
Second green flag: The descriptive notes for the native plants, many of which were grown in-house.
I wanted raised bed soil, but they had only two ripped bags in inventory. Thanks to their knowledgeable staff, I got their rose ready mix to combine with compost and was able to purchase the other raised bed soil at a discount after they taped up the rips. For a note to other customers, the raised bed soil may not be in stock for a while until they can put in an order when other items are low inventory, but as you can tell from my experience, all is not lost!
Third green flag: The beautiful purple passiflora blooms adorning the fence near the back by the soils.
Many thanks to Anne and Aaron for their friendly assistance. You know...

And then a new kid came to your class, you hit it off, and even though they weren't your old friend, they were equally wonderful in their own right? That's how I feel about Greensleeves taking the place of Green & Growing.
I've been to Greensleeves twice now, and both times I've left with amazing experiences (and a trunk full of plants). The greenhouse had the most lush, vibrant, and huge hanging baskets. For $19.99. $19.99, yall. Better believe I grabbed two of them. They are the absolute stars of my back porch now.
The natives selection in the back of the nursery had me in awe. It was like seeing movie stars in real life. The prices on everything are incredibly fair, and the stock appears healthy and varied.
The employees here are the real gems, though. Both times I have brought my young daughter, and everyone has been so gracious and helpful to us. Employees are knowledgeable and attentive, without hovering.
I look forward to many more trips to Greensleeves! Grateful to have such a special place in...
Read moreGreensleeves was a delight! I'll come back to update this when they've been open a while but my first trip here was WONDERFUL. I'm a native plant enthusiast and found kindred spirits with Sherry and Anne (forgive me if I misspelled!) who were both knowledgeable and helpful, as I was on crutches. I couldn't believe that the entire back yard of the nursery was completely full of native TX plants and grasses and vines and even a rare kind of central Texas milkweed! What even! Go quickly before the fans of the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center twice annual plant sale find out about this gem, because this place is packed with valuable plants and at good prices, too! These beauties are heat, cold, and drought resistant, and which have evolved for this exact habitat, so they take a lot less water and in many cases require almost no care after the first year and an annual pruning session. Apparently the new owner has grown these all himself? I am in awe, y'all. My photos don't do it justice. I only had space in my car for some bluebonnets and snapdragon vines but I was SO HAPPY I was practically doing a dance for joy on...
