Pro's: Huge selection of gear. One of the only shops in the area. Great to look around in. Great selection of amps and guitars, as well as outdated PA gear.
Con's: Overpriced. Great to look, not so much to buy. Repairs are not always top notch. Guitar work is good enough, but electronics repair is always questionable there, they are not nearly as experienced as they claim to be.
My bad experience: I met Jim when I first moved into the area at age 18. I had posted an ad on Craigslist for a peavey amp I was selling. Jim contacted me asking to trade for it. I mentioned having a couple of broken items, and he offered to repair my gear in return for my $100 peavey amp. I dropped off my three items- a Carvin bass amp and turntable for repair, and the peavey amp as payment. I checked back with him a couple weeks later after hearing nothing, and he told me to stop in to check out my two finished repairs (I believe I had to reach out to him, very unprofessional). At that point he informed me that he had encountered more issues than he had anticipated, and had put a lot of time and money into repairing my two items (again, he had not called at any point with an estimate or an update). He claimed he had put several hundred dollars worth of work into repairing my two pieces, and when he went to check my peavey amp, it was not working (when I checked later, the peavey amp was working fine, one out of two jacks was slightly scratchy, took me one spray with de-oxit to fix). He told me that the only two ways to remedy the situation were to- either pay him the $300 for his unwarranted repair (which I would never have had had him finish, if he had asked), or leave him with my $350 Carvin bass amp. I didn't have the cash to cover the repairs, and ended up leaving behind the Carvin and taking the turntable and my peavey, a move I regret to this day. This was extremely unprofessional, and I strongly feel that I got taken advantage of. The worst part is that the repair done to the turntable, essentially a $200 repair, didn't hold up at all. I was back to square one, minus a bass amp, just a few months later. I fully avoid the Music Meseum because of that experience, and I advise anyone visiting to be extremely cautious in their dealings with this store. Check prices on ebay and Craigslist, and be very wary with your repairs, there are many better repair guys around. I'm sure there are many others with only good stories, but for me it takes just one negative experience to avoid a small shop like...
Read moreFirstly, I would like to start by saying. I don't take pleasure in going out of my way to leave a negative review at any place of business but dealing with music museum on and off over the years has given me plenty of reasons. This store is exactly as it's named. Music museum or better yet Jim's rip off museum because you'll look but never want to touch. That's the kind of experience you can expect from the owner. I've delt with Jim over many years on and off and I can tell you that he cares just as much for his customer as he does ripping you off on just about anything he has to offer. I've had stratocasters set up by him for well over a hundred dollars. That he claims he doesn't even need to play because he's set them up so often. I'm sorry but any guitar tech that isn't testing out the guitars he is setting up. Shouldn't be a guitar tech but that only scratches the surface. If you're looking to trade gear look somewhere else because he makes his own numbers up and doesn't follow todays market. He will tell you he's interested in looking at what you have only to tell you he's not interested or offer you an insulting offer. After he feels like you insulted him. Jim isn't interested in helping the starving musician. Hes interested in your money and his subpar work and prices prove that. Jim might have been the go to guy at one point but over the years quality and care have gone increasingly down. He would rather tell customers why they are wrong and why he is right. If you're coming here for that Mom and Pop shop warmth look else where. This place is exactly what Jim wants it to be. A don't touch museum where nothing gets sold. If you're looking for astronomical prices, poor selection(don't be fooled, majority of gear has been in that store for years collecting dust), and an egotistical shop owner. That would rather horde his products then sell them. Then you've come to the right place! If you're looking for a tech that keeps up with the times and understands the value of a dollar. I would highly recommend "Loudo Guitars South Jersey Guitar Repair." Pete brown who is the owner. Does fantastic work, not only does he set up and maintenance guitars. He's also a master Luthier that builds...
Read moreMusic Museum, after 5 visits to Music Museum, (OK) I find the owner is very knowledgeable about many kinds of instruments, many types of amps as well as accessories. He helps you there. I find the people very nice to deal with. I am not sure if I will return though... (Not OK) I can't overlook the feeling of 1000 lbs. Of stuff in a 100 lb. box... (OK) So, at your first glance it seems an old school place...run by a knowledgable guy from the neighborhood. Very Cool. ...(NOT OK)Then you realize 5 purchases later the truth, that on some things they charge a fair amount more for everyday stuff than other stores. What I purchased, I found the other stores charge HALF (1) or 15--20% less than them on (4) Guitar & Bass items. Honestly. . . I did not appreciate that. So. . . "Shop Accordingly" before you go. & also (VIBE) The owner would do customers a big favor to open up the store a bit . .or add showroom space or SOMETHING. . . C'MON MAN..... The fact that you literally cannot move in his store is just fine by the owner but uncomfortably OBVIOUS when you are there, just trying to see what is there....not to mention whatever you might actually demo or play-(NOT GOOD) The other ELEPHANT in the Store is Music Museum guitars or amps will most likely totally wreak of nicotine and cigarettes, like the store does, wow.... I noticed when you get it to the car and then to your home extensive cleaning will be mandatory to get rid of the overwhelming smell of cigarettes if you can. I feel that a store owner that smokes a pack or two a day should restpect his products and potential customers more than he currently does and not do it (chain smoke) in the store. Other than that I found it's ok. Improvements though would help...
