Growing up in Pittsburgh, Schenley Park has always been a part of my life. One of my fondest memories is of my mother taking me to one of the parks there. As a child I dubbed it "Mousey-cheese Park", lol, because there was a very big red&blue sphere noticeable from the front of the park. There was a slide that went around it and the whole thing had different size circular wholes in it. It reminded me of a big wheel of Swiss cheese, the very kind they always showed mice snatching on cartoons, lol. Ah, the magic, wonder and imagination of a child! I was petite and slender, but a very fit young child, so it was my favorite thing to play on in the park. I would climb on it, in and out of the holes and slide on it for at least a good 45 minutes and then of course go on the swings! I have so many great memories; sledriding as a child and teen to iceskating as a teen and young adult, as well as one of my first driving lessons given to me by my friend, even though I didn't have my permit yet 😉🤫😄. To be quite honest, I've cherished Schenley Park as a local landmark. You pretty much can do anything you want here, when it comes to outdoor activities. I have also enjoyed the duck pond here, the pinic areas and the walking/running trails. Bikes are welcome too! I look forward to creating many more cherished memories here. I do hope you will explore this wonderfully scenic and quite large park and create wonderful memories of your own! I know it is so lovely this time of the year! What a gift, to be able to enjoy the great outdoors and not have to leave Pittsburgh! Thank you for allowing me to share. Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to...
Read moreAs a CMU student, Schenley Park is my reset button just across the Schenley Bridge from campus. Between classes I cut through to Phipps Conservatory, grab a bench near Panther Hollow, or jog the loop when I need to clear my head after debugging. Flagstaff Hill turns into our living room: ultimate frisbee on sunny afternoons, hammocks and problem sets when the weather’s perfect, and outdoor movies in the summer. In fall, the trails make a quick study break; in winter, we sled between exams; in spring, everything smells like fresh rain and mulch. It’s close enough to feel like part of CMU, but green and quiet enough to remind me there’s more to grad school than labs and deadlines. Whenever the semester gets loud, Schenley gives me...
Read moreThe plants were many and well-signed. There were many different gardens in the "rooms" of the conservatory. The outdoor gardens were also lovely.
Everything except the plants is political. The "green" speech and signage were heavy-handed. The cafe doesn't even sell chips, because they are against them.
There is no history offered about the creation of the garden or about Henry Phipps, as if his great ability to create wealth as a partner of Andrew Carnegie in the steel business is too shameful to mention.
100% of the steel, glass and brick of the site would not be replaceable without fossil fuels, and the renovation of the conservatory would be impossible, but they don't mention...
