First timers here today! We were going to check out Upper Schuylkill Valley Park, but a few friends suggested this place for animals AND blueberry picking. Overall, had a good time but the signage/instruction here was lacking and when you come on a hot day with a toddler, I don't have time to be asking for price checks and "how-to's." Even some handmade arrows to get to the barn and picking areas would have been helpful. Label the produce with prices too, please. Maybe there was a price sheet somewhere but it wasn't obvious to me.
There was a sign posted about blueberry picking for $7.99/lb (the most expensive rate I've heard of, but I'd rather pay that then $10/person or the price of a zoo ticket to go visit farm animals so I'm not totally complaining about that price), but I had to ask how it worked and where it was. Bring your own container seems to be recommended, but they may put it in paper bags to weigh and pay. It's behind the barn, not next to the barn, behind the barn. No signs once you get out there and on a hot day wandering around is not ideal. So just remember: BEHIND the barn. Go to the barn, make a right to walk the entire length of the barn, then immediately turn left when you hit flower fields. Don't go in the flower fields. Past the cows on your left. Behind all the barns. There's netting over the bushes, feel free to go right in!
There was also flower picking available but no signs for that either. Is it certain flowers in certain rows? The whole farm? Do some cost more than others? Do I bring my own scissors and bucket?
When we got back to the farm stand most produce didn't have labels and after the $7.99/lb price for doing my own labor for blueberries, I was pretty hesitant to try and buy anything unlabeled. 2/$1 green peppers seems reasonable, corn seemed reasonable (I think 5/$6 or a whole basket for $10?). Everything else, I wasn't sure! We did partake in their mason jar lemonade ($8) and it was pretty good and had a ton of fruit in it. Bottled water not labeled but I think it was $1 based on our final tab.
Signage and labels please!!! Otherwise,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIām so appreciative of this beautiful little farm in the middle of suburbiaā sandwiched behind the crossing of two major highways is a little slice of nature heaven. Great for kids, Iāve been taking my son here for years and itās always enjoyable looking at the ādonkey friends,ā pigs, cows, goats, horses, ponies, chickens, turkeys, and feeding the huge gorgeous coy fish in the little pond. You can wander the whole farm. Thereās all kinds of crops throughout the year, and the indoor and outdoor markets carry a little of everything even if they donāt grow it all. The fields of flowers are amazing in the spring, summer, and fall; the hayrides and giant hay bales are great in the fall; weāve even done a birthday party here that was great (trying to set it up with them was a challenge though). Only complaint is the sometimes disorganization and attitudes of the management or owners (see bad reviews here), but I canāt even imagine what itās like to try to run a family farm these days. So, maybe avoid the older grumpy people when you see them, step away and enjoy the other stuff here. Love when they have bonfires gong for warmth. Lots of photographers do photo shoots here (I bought a $15 Photographers Club membership to do shoots here whenever, not that you canāt take photos but I wanted to support them and do some more pro shooting). Good local honey and other local wares. Yummy donuts. Bushels of corn. Blueberry picking is amazing! Thereās other crops you can pick yourself which is fun for kids and people of all ages. Open late. Nice kids who run the cash registers. I hope this place is...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI have been to this farm several times before and have always had such a wonderful time and today seemed no different, until I got up to the register to pay for the flowers I picked with my friend. The cashier was an older white gentleman and the total of the flowers came out to be 2 dollars, which my friend attempted to pay for with a credit card. The man proceeded to ridicule us for not carrying cash and ultimately was incredibly disrespectful as a way to try to stroke his ego and embarrass two young women. A specific quote from this event includes āHow could someone walk around these days and not carry cash with them.ā My friend and I were in shock as this was occurring and he tried to make us put our items down and leave right in that moment. My boyfriend was there so I went up to ask him for cash as the cashier continued to try and tell me to give him the flowers. As I was obtaining the cash from my boyfriend the treatment by the cashier had shocked me so intensely that I could not stop shaking and crying and had to escort myself to the car. My friend continued to stand by the cashier as my boyfriend paid for the flowers while the cashier continued his reign of terror by speaking to the customers behind us that āPeople in this generation donāt even know who the president isā. Evidently, this man was on some kind of ageist power trip but I canāt emphasize enough how much I have never been disrespected more as a...
