Since the beginning of the history of Ponce, the citizens recognized the importance and necessity of the fire service: in 1820 more than a hundred houses were destroyed by a raging fire; in 1823, by order of the Governor Don Miguel de la Torre, the first Fire Department of Puerto Rico was created, the service was compulsory for every male between 16 and 60 years old. The Civil Fire Corps from Ponce, which has survived until today, was created in 1853. The structure of the Old Firehouse Museum was built in 1882 to serve as the main pavilion of the Fair Exhibition held in Ponce in July 1882. The Old Firehouse has undergone very few changes to its original design; it has become an emblematic symbol of the city and one of the main attractions for local and foreign tourists. The Museum preserves photographs, documents, tools and other attractions of historic value. On July 1, 1990, after the restoration, the Firehouse of Ponce was reopened by the initiative of Mayor Rafael (Churumba) Cordero Santiago, the architect Paul O'Neill Ojeda led this work. Read moreThis is a beautifully built historic firestation in central Ponce. The distinctive red and black color makes the building stand out among other structures and draws attention to its old style design. Inside are five rooms dedicated to the history of fire fighting, and to this firehouse specifically. There are several displays honoring fire departments around the world, as well as photographs of the original group of firefighters stationed in Ponce. The two rooms upstairs are dedicated to displaying the original equipment used by the Ponce fire department in the 1800's and they have wonderfully restored firehoses and reels on display on the first floor.
Looking at some of the photos on the wall, gives the impression that the building was once much larger, and that living and sleeping areas that were originally part of the structure are no longer there. A close look will show you where there were once doorways that are no longer there.
The architecture of the building is absolutely beautiful, and it is definitely worth a visit to this monument to Puerto Rican history. But beware - the only parking available is on the square...
