I went for the 50th anniversary of Rocky at 10:30 on August 16th, and I am so disappointed in my experience after hearing such good things.
This was, hands down, the worst show I’ve ever seen in Portland.
Granted the cast was brand new, but still, I didn’t expect to pay to see what felt like a high school production of rocky horror, and not even a good one at that.
We had to sit through a half hour of awful improv before the movie even began, maybe that’s just the standard for this show, but I did not sign up to watch the worst improv of my life.
The MC came up on stage bragging about yelling at the bike bus that cruised by right before they started seating people. Their bits weren’t funny, towards the end of a particular bit, no one was laughing and it was obvious.
The call and response was so bad, and not at all what it should’ve been. The cast was screaming over each other and the movie. It was very difficult to hear what they were saying especially because when they screamed, they didn’t scream in unison.
The cast was chanting out of tune virtually the whole time. That screaming and chanting made it feel like a nerdy pep rally but not in a good way.
The way the cast members in the audience screamed was so out of place that I couldn’t tell the difference between heckling and the performance.
It honestly was so bad that it’s gonna be a hot minute before I watch rocky horror again. I want to give Clinton theatre another chance, but I’m sure as hell not giving that cast a second chance.
The actor that played franknfurter is the only one that had any business up on the stage that night. Everyone else hardly moved while dancing, virtually just stood there, made absolutely zero facial expressions and were breaking character constantly. I felt like I was watching 5 year olds act out the internets worst memes because that’s what they solely relied on for humor during this show. Actually, watching 5 year olds act out memes would’ve been much better than this.
I brought a friend who had never seen rocky horror and he couldn’t understand what was going on because of the unintelligible screaming. I highly doubt he’ll be returning to this theatre any time soon either.
This genuinely makes me worried as we’re seeing a lot of queer safe spaces from our city eliminated due to poor management, and I don’t want to see that happen here.
I get having a new cast can be difficult, but this was so beyond horrible, there...
Read moreFirst off let me say that I love the Clinton Street Theater and almost everything they do is $120% top-notch. Some of you may be Rocky Horror Picture Show fans and you know how awesome it is that Clinton Street has continued this phenomenal Interactive experience for the amount of years that they have. The staff here is always been super friendly helpful generous empathetic and most of the time very very good looking on top of everything else. I personally have gone on stage in three different decades to reburst my Rocky Horror Picture Show Cherry as a virgin. To add to this they also play and host community events that are top-notch low budget big budget awesome budget no budget all kinds of things that will make your time at the Clinton Street amazing not to mention it's on the corner of an amazing part of southeast Portland that is super bike friendly and just super awesome in general. 100% recommend checking out anything that they do in...
Read morethis review is specifically for the Rocky horror picture show on August 30th. I was hearing numerous complaints both from the actors and the audience that the volume was way too low. this would've been a fun show if we could've heard anything being said, however, all that could be heard were ad libs and callbacks from the audience. when I've gone to Rocky horror before (2019) we were able to hear the words and songs of the movie. If it is your intention to have the entire production be talked/screamed over at least have subtitles on the screen for those of us who actually wanna follow along. It was very disheartening to see a lot of my friends leave before the first act was over, simply because we couldn't hear anything over the people screaming in the first few rows.
The Clinton St., Theatre has put tremendous effort into movie showings, and the 10 minute place festivals, however, it felt lacking when it came to...
