I first learned about Third Eye from a street festival at which they were vending. Charles was very nice and they brought an awesome selection of books. I continue to see them at different events, but finally made it in to the bookstore where I was greeted by Charles and an associate, who were both super friendly and happy to converse about books and music! The book selection in the store is outstanding and perfectly curated for a book buying experience you aren't going to find at any other bookstore, let alone at one in Portland (and we have a lot of bookstores). I returned another time to a pretty packed store where conversations were flowing with Charles and even among the customers in the store. You learn a lot just by being in the store and hearing conversations! It's a smaller store, but I spent a lot of time looking at nearly every book, many of which are by Black authors or are African-centered. I could have stayed all day, but I did pop in to their wellness store, where Michelle was equally friendly and helpful. Since then, I've placed a special order online for a number of books they didn't have in the shop (and which are kind of hard to find elsewhere, too)...that process was awesome...quick response, excellent and friendly communication about the process, and a phone call letting me know the books were in. If you're in Portland and you aren't shopping at Third Eye, you're really missing out. At the very least, you should be following them on social media to hear about the awesome bookish events they sponsor. If you're visiting Portland, you need to make this a stop. I promise you won't be...
Read moreWent in on my birthday yesterday to buy myself a few things, and get a copy of the Black panther Party graphic novel for my mom. I spoke with Charles, one of the owners, and we had an excellent conversation. He is very helpful and very welcoming, and holds space extremely well to make real connections with his customers. He's extremely knowledgeable about so many topics, especially the history of race relations in Oregon, which is one of the books I had gone there looking for. He's very good at making recommendations for what you're looking for, and is genuinely a delight to buy things from! Looking forward to returning again and again, hopefully next time I'll get to meet his wife who also owns the store and has a holistic healing business in the building next door!
So great to see them thriving on Division, and in a storefront that has been on that street for a very long time. Old Division was such a different place than it is now, with so many massive newly constructed buildings with very little character. The building they are in is part of old Portland, as are they, and it is fitting that they are representing the important and wonderful history and legacy of black people in Oregon from an older building with a lot...
Read moreBest book store I’ve ever been to! The owner was so kind and welcoming to me! He had so much personality. The space was well organized with an amazing selection of books. Even a book section for little brown children. I loved to see that. I do not have children but when I do I want them to be able to read books that represent them as well. And teach them to value themselves. Charles does a great job of picking out the books to put in his store. I then went next door to his wife’s business wholistic healing and chatted with her. Both businesses are so well put together. And those two are so full of love. His wife wrapped me in her arms & gave me a hug before I left. Energy doesn’t lie. And they are great souls with amazing...
